Naturalistically and superbly potted to resemble a section of pine tree trunk, the exterior carved in high relief with a sturdy pine tree section on one side forming the handle, its gnarled branches extended with lush blooms of iconic pine tree leaves, the intricately carved tree bark vividly highlighted by the natural grain and crevices, the recessed base carefully incised with a series of kaishu inscriptions followed by the potter's signature, the stoneware of a dark brown colour with fine golden speckles all around. 12.7cm wide. Estimate HK$ 400,000 - 600,000 (€38,000 - 57,000)

Compare another two brush washers which also bear the signatures of Shi Ying: one in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, museum number B60 P1733, and the other from the E. Fowler Jr. Foundation Museum, illustrated by Terese T. Bartholomew, I-Hsing Ware, New York, 1977, pp.66-67, pl.43.

According to the Ming dynasty connoisseur, Zhou Gaoqi (1596-1645) in his book, yangxian minghu xi: yaliu,(Collections of Yangxian Teapot: Scholars), p.4, Shi Ying is the hao of Jiang Bofu, who along with Ou Zhengchun, Shao Wenjin and Shao Wenyin were students of Shi Dabin. He was a friend of the scholar Chen Jiru (1558-1639) and because of his association with the literary circles he was discreet about being a potter, though his pieces were not commonplace.

GIFT OF LOVE
Every piece of jewellery in itself is a creation bearing the kindest affection and sincere wishes; it is a ‘Gift of Love’. This is the concept behind each unique art piece meticulously crafted by designer Wen Wan Xin, founder and artistic director of Chara Wen Jewelry. Her works are always embedded with a heart-shaped Burmese ruby cabochon, sometimes immediately visible, other times hidden, to symbolize ‘love and joy’, which is also the meaning of ‘Chara’.

the cross with a cartellino inscribed: INRI in black enamel, enamelled gold with pearls: 7.2cm., 2 7/8 in overall. Estimation 3,000 — 4,000 GBP

The goldsmith who made this beautiful crucifix has succeeded in creating a wonderful play of textures that would have captivated the Renaissance patron. In his attempt to represent a naturalistic cross, he has successfully employed several virtuoso techniques, which include enamelling the cut-off branches green and chasing the surfaces of the cross so as to resemble the grain of wood. A similar 16th-century gold pendant crucifix with naturalistic cross can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no. 260-1869), whilst the physiognomy of the corpus and the use of pearls compare with a 16th-century Spanish pendant, which is published by Muller (op. cit. p. 64). The cross with cut-off branches was one of the symbols of the Spanish Inquisition, similar branches appear on a Spanish processional cross dating from 1500 in the British Museum (inv. no. 1911, 0621.2)

Bronze moulé. Diamètre : 11 cm. (Belle patine verte). Estimation : 1 200 / 1 500 €

the reverse of the bezel inscribed with the Jesuit symbol: IHS with a cross and two nails; enamelled gold, with a circular bezel set with rock crystal above a scene of the crucifixion in gold - bezel: 16mm., 5/8 in - ring size U. Estimation 4,000 — 6,000 GBP

The present ring finds a comparison in another gold ring with black enamelling and with a bezel set with rock crystal atop a scene of the crucifixion in the British Museum, London (inv. no. 1978,1002.105). This ring is catalogued as French, circa 1600, but is of noticeably lesser quality than the present very fine example. Another ring fitting the same description is mentioned by Dalton in his catalogue of the Franks Bequest (op. cit., p. 120, no. 779). The black enamel decoration finds comparisons in numerous late 16th- and early 17th-century rings, including on a gold and rock crystal signet ring sold at Christie's London on 9 October 2012, lot 385.
