NOTE DE CATALOGUE: Ces deux timbales sont gravées aux armes de la ville de Benfeld. Située près de Strasbourg, la ville fut cédée à laFrance après la bataille de Nordlingen en 1634 après que Louis XIII ait signé à Paris un traité avec les princes protestants. Il s'agissait en effet d'une place stratégique pour la France pour y faire "passer et repasser les troupes que sa majesté jugera estre requises pour le bien commun".

These two beakers are engraved with the town arms of Benfeld. Located near Strasbourg, it was ceded to France after the battle of Nordlingen in 1634 when Louis XIII made a treaty with the protestant princes at Paris. It was of strategic importance to the French being near the river crossing into Strasbourg, which was needed `pour y faire passer et repasser les troupes que sa majesté jugera estre requises pour le bien commun'.

NOTE DE CATALOGUE: The present piece belongs to a small group of blue-and-white Wanli mark and period dishes all bearing a different landscape scene in the interior, while retaining the dragon design band around the rim and the exterior decorated with alternating floral and fruit sprays. For example, see a larger dish, the centre painted with boys at play, from the Clark and Palmer collections illustrated in Sir Harry Garner, Oriental Blue and White, London, 1973, pl. 53B, with four leaping dragons shown full-face around the rim; another, also decorated with the boys theme, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 14th November 1989, lot 39; and a third example included in the exhibition The Fame of Flame. Imperial Wares of the Jiajing and Wanli Periods, University Museum of Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 2010, cat. no. 89, from the Songde Tang collection.

Dishes of this type can also be found with the inner wall painted with the ‘dragon and phoenix’ motif, such as the dish included ibid., cat. no. 90, with the centre depicting a figural scene from the Han dynasty novel Biographies of Immortals by Liu Xiang and the outer wall painted with floral and fruit sprays as seen on this example. Compare also a dish sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 27th November 2007, lot 1743; and another, from the Jingguantang collection, sold at Christie’s New York, 16th September 1998, lot 366.

the deep gently rounded sides rising from a straight foot, the exterior painted with an undulating lotus scroll, framed above and below by stylised foliate bands, the interior with a central medallion enclosing wavy foliate motifs, bordered by a composite floral scroll just below the rim, the base inscribed with a six-character Xuande mark within a double-circle; 15.4cm., 6 1/8 in. Estimation: 80,000 - 120,000 GBP

NOTE DE CATALOGUE: The present bowl is an extremely rare example of Xuande mark and period vessels of this shape and decoration. Painted in a soft blue with a distinct 'heaping and piling' effect of darker-burnt spots of cobalt that is characteristic of the period, the piece stands out for its rarety as well as its elegant shape and rich decoration. Only two other closely related bowls are known, both in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in A Panorama of Ceramics in the Collection of the National Palace Museum. Hsuan-te Ware I, Taipei, 2000, pls. 105 and 106.

See a slightly larger bowl with comparable shallow foot ring, the interior painted with six blooms on scrolling lotus and the exterior with two bands of slender lotus petals below a similar wave band as seen on this bowl, excavated at Zhushan in 1984 and included in the Chang Foundation exhibition, Xuande Imperial Porcelain Excavated at Jingdezhen, Taipei, 1998, cat. no. 107; and another bowl of this type in the National Palace Museum included in the museum's Special Exhibition of Selected Hsuan-te Imperial Porcelains of the Ming Dynasty, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1998, cat. no. 154
