NEW YORK, NY.- This week at Sotheby’s, the auctions of Chinese Art brought a combined total of $43,687,377 million – comfortably exceeding the high estimate for the three sales of $31.3 million. The top lot of the week at Sotheby’s was A Rare Molded Blue And White Barbed Rim Dish, Yuan Dynasty, 14th Century, which sold for $4,197,000, dwarfing the $200/300,000 estimate after it was sought by eight bidders in the Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art auction which took place on 18th and 19th March. The Fine Classical Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy sale on 20th March was led by the Wang Shouren album, Parting At The Ye River which sold for $2,045,000, many multiples of the $60/80,000 estimate.

Dr. Tao Wang, Head of Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art at Sotheby’s New York said: “This was an extraordinary week in New York. Time and time again, we saw multiple bidders – sometimes as many as ten on a single lot - drive prices for the very best Chinese Works of Art far over the estimates. Collectors both in China and elsewhere continue to seek pieces that have been hidden in private collections, such as the Barbed Rim Dish which has never appeared on the market and went on to sell for $4.2 million. The other story this week was the ever-growing appeal of Archaic Bronzes such as those in our special auction, and the distinguished Tian Mian Fu Yi Jiao which fetched $2.4 million.”

Rongde Zhang, Head of Sotheby’s Chinese Classical Paintings Department in New York, said: “Throughout our sale we saw collectors go to great lengths to pursue the rarest pieces, often sending prices far in excess of the high estimate. There was tremendous pre-sale interest in the album of poetry by Wang Shouren but the $2 million price was still a wonderful surprise.”

FINE CHINESE CERAMICS AND WORKS OF ART

Sotheby’s Asia Week started with the special sale of Archaic Bronzes and the Wu Dacheng Jijin. All but one lot sold, bringing a total of $3,491,250, comfortably exceeding the high estimate. The auction was led by The Ji Zu Yi Zun: A Superb And Important Bronze Ritual Wine Vessel, Late Shang Dynasty, 13th-11th Century BC, which sold for $1,265,000, against an estimate of $300/400,000, while The Wu Dacheng Jijintu Scroll, Qing Dynasty, Late 19th Century, fetched $605,000, several times the pre-sale expectations of $100/150,000.

The Fine Chinese Ceramics & Works of Art sale saw particularly enthusiastic bidding for ceramics, bronzes, and furniture driving the total to $21,311,252 (est. $11/16 million). The $4.2 million Barbed Rim Dish, the outstanding highlight of the week at Sotheby’s, was one of a number of ceramics that exceeded the high estimates, with A Rare Wucai 'Fish' Jar, Jiajing Mark And Period, fetching $845,000 (est. $200/300,000), and A Fine And Rare Celadon-Glazed Cylindrical Vase, Yongzheng Mark And Period, selling for $665,000 (est. $150/250,000). Other highlights included A Pair Of Zitan Demilune Tables (Yueyazhuo), Qing Dynasty, 18th/19th Century which achieved a price of $725,000 (est. $200/300,000), as well as a series of bronzes such as An Important And Very Rare Bronze Ritual Wine Vessel, Late Shang Dynasty, 13th-11th Century BC which fetched $2,405,000 (est. $400/600,000).

An Oval-Cut D-color. Potentially Flawless Diamond of 40.43 carats. Estimate: $5,800,000 – 7,800,000. Photo: Christie's Images Ltd 2014.

NEW YORK, NY.- On April 16, Christie’s New York will lead the spring jewelry auction season with a superb offering of more than 250 jewels in a two-session sale at its flagship Rockefeller Center saleroom. The auction includes a wide range of jewels, from top-quality colorless and colored diamonds, rare and historic gemstones, natural pearls, and signed jewels from the most renowned houses such as René Boivin, Cartier, Graff, JAR, Tiffany & Co, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Harry Winston. The sale is expected to achieve in excess of $50 million.

Rahul Kadakia, Head of Jewelry for Christie’s Americas and Switzerland, commented: “Our April 16 auction in New York includes a magnificent selection of important diamonds, rare colored gems, and superb signed jewels. From the Collection of Riki and Jerome Shaw, offered to raise a very significant amount of money for animal rescue, the beautiful jewelry collection of Kathleen and Martin Field, an Historic emerald and diamond brooch, by Van Cleef & Arpels, to two rare colored diamond rings by JAR, the sale offers jewels to the taste of every collector. Going into the spring jewelry season, Christie’s is proud to present collectors the very best jewelry at our sales worldwide.”

THE COLLECTION OF RIKI AND JEROME SHAW

ALL PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT ANIMAL RESCUE

Riki Shaw, the private collector of this magnificent group of jewelry has made it her singular mission to protect and better the lives of the most vulnerable animals across the country. Inspired by her love for the dog she adopted 15 years ago, she has become a leading advocate for animal rights and rescue in the nation. Riki has steadfastly worked to improve the lives of the most downtrodden animals by providing them with shelter, hope, and love. Through her personal engagement with this cause, countless dogs have been rescued from puppy mills, unscrupulous breeders and being euthanized. Expected to achieve in excess of $6 million, the total proceeds of The Collection of Riki and Jerome Shaw will benefit cage-free shelters in the continued fight against animal cruelty.

A ROYAL EMERALD

This April, Christie’s will present An Historic Emerald and Diamond Brooch, by Van Cleef & Arpels (estimate: $250,000 – 350,000). What makes this present brooch so extraordinary is that the central emerald originally adorned the diadem (tiara) of Marie-Louise, the second wife of Napoleon. The Emperor presented the diadem as part of a matching set of jewelry, made by Etienne Nitot et Fils of Paris, to his wife on the occasion of their wedding in 1810. The Empress later bestowed the set to her aunt, Archduchess Elise and subsequently, in 1953, the diadem was sold to Van Cleef & Arpels. In 1967, Van Cleef & Arpels created and designed the present brooch around the central emerald of the diadem for the great American philanthropist, Mrs. Sybil Harrington. Christie’s offered the Collection of Mrs. Harrington in October of 1999 at which time this brooch sold for $178,500. Christie's will offer it once again to afford a new collector the rare opportunity to carry on the legacy of this Royal jewel.

KING OF GEMS

Important colorless and colored diamonds have become ubiquitous at Christie’s major jewelry auctions, and the New York Magnificent Jewels auction features a selection of gems in sizes ranging from less than one carat up to over 50 carats, top colorless diamonds include a Pair of D-color Internally Flawless Circular-Cut Diamond Ear Pendants of 22.60 and 22.31 carats (estimate: $7,000,000 – 10,000,000), an Oval-Cut D-color Diamond of 40.43 carats (estimate: $5,800,000 – 7,800,000), and a D-color Flawless Briolette Diamond of 50.05 carats (estimate: $5,500,000 – 7,500,000).

While prices for large flawless diamonds of this exceptional quality continue to reach new heights, Christie’s has retained the world auction record for the highest price per carat for a colorless diamond with the celebrated sale of The Archduke Joseph Diamond at Christie’s Geneva in November 2012. This historic gem sold for a record-breaking $21.5 million ($282,485 per carat).

JEWELS BY JAR

Undisputedly one of the premiere jewelry artists of our time, the two rings by JAR in the New York Magnificent Jewels auction are as equally imaginative and unique as they are rich in history. As Lot 95 in the April 16 auction, the Historic Fancy Yellowish Green Diamond, was first recorded as the engagement ring of Countess Eliza to Count Zygmunt Krasinski, one of Poland’s greatest Romantic poets, whom she married in Dresden in 1843. Set with an old-mine cut at 2.49 carats, the present diamond is estimated at $300,000- 500,000. Furthermore, an Oval-Cut Fancy Intense Yellow Diamond of 15.75 carats is estimated at $500,000 – 700,000 and formerly sold in the Jewels of Hope Auction, The Collection of Mrs. Lily Safra, the most successful charity auction in Christie’s history.

TOP SIGNED JEWELS

Great design is the core of what makes classic jewelry hold its value over the long term, and Christie’s will present the most significant examples from the major jewelry houses in each of its auctions this spring. In New York, Christie’s presents over sixty signed jewels by Suzanne Belperron, René Boivin, BVLGARI, Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, David Webb, and Harry Winston, among others.

Puzzle of Chinese imperial white jade 'hinge-fitting' puts Bonhams sale in the top bracket

An Imperial white jade archaistic 'hinge-fitting', Qianlong six-character fang gu mark and of the period. Photo: Bonhams.

LONDON.- The precisely constructed elements of a white jade hinge-fitting made for the Qianlong Emperor (reign 1736-1795), might have served to remind him of his duty to be scrupulous and precise in his own rule. This beautiful object, estimated at £200,000 to £300,000, is one of the top items in Bonhams sale of Fine Chinese Art on May 15th in London.

Scholars still do not know the precise meaning of this culturally intriguing object. Bearing a Qianlong six-character fang gu mark and of the period the pure white stone is of exceptional clarity, unusually carved with two rectangular hollowed tubes, each of the wider sides carved in mirror image to suggest an archaistic mask.

The hinge-fitting embodies much of the artistic and historical pre-occupations of the Qianlong period. Carved from exceptionally fine and lustrous white stone, with even the minor flaws most cleverly incorporated into the scrollwork, the thinly hollowed supremely challenging yet technically flawless piece is representative of the highest skill of the 18th century craftsman. Furthermore it falls into a group of jade pieces carved with the Qianlong fanggu mark, specifically carved with archaistic designs inspired by archaic bronzes to reflect the concerns of the Qianlong Emperor with drawing moral strength and righteousness from the examples of the ancients.

A few examples of jade pieces designed to the same specifications as the present lot are preserved in the most prestigious museum collections, including a white jade piece in the Palace Museum, Beijing.

The design has been and remains, to scholars, collectors and curators, a most intriguing puzzle. The form has ancient origins, and its ancient bronze prototype can be found in the Catalogue of Xiqing Antiquities, which was an illustrated catalogue of ancient bronzes in the Imperial Collection, completed in 1751. However even the cataloguers could not describe the bronze prototype other than as a 'Han Dynasty ornament' and to state that the two tubes are movable.

It is interesting to compare the present lot and those in museum collections with another white jade hinged piece which is further unusual in being inscribed with an Imperial poem. The poem appears to refer to the jade piece as a 'ruler' to be used to 'compare lengths' with 'precisely fitting workmanship'. This pre-occupation with the idea of measuring is also connected to the idea of the benevolent ruler who is guided well.

Footed bowl with foliate rim, inside a court scene is depicted referring to falcon hunting and the game of polo. In the centre a young prince is seated on a high-backed throne surrounded by four knights alternating with pairs of facing falcons. The knights are carrying polo sticks, for this was one of the favourite pastimes of the Iranian court. The rich polychrome minai decoration of the interior, contrasts with the sobriety of the exterior decoration which is solely calligraphy and expresses good wishes for a long life and power for the owner of the bowl.

This piece has Far Eastern influences as can be seen by its form and the whitish tone of the glaze. The decorative theme representing a court scene is in the Middle Eastern tradition.

Persian potters developed a technique called minai that enabled them to use a range of varied colours, a technique used in this piece that is decorated in blue, red, green, violet, black and gold. (© 2013 Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian)

Bowl with double walls with four foliate panels where holy personages from the Taoist religion stand out in relief under bamboo leaves, framed by a fine rope of pearls that accentuates the lobed edge and is repeated in the interior. Partially translucid, it is covered with bluish glaze, described by the term qingbai (literally “blue-white”) and more recently, yingqing (“shadow-blue”).

The piece comes from the kilns at Jingdezhen, that with the introduction of underglaze cobalt blue painting became the most outstanding centre for the manufacture of Chinese porcelain, a distinction that it has maintained to the present day.

Provenance: Henry Brown Esq. collection. Acquired by Calouste Gulbenkian, through M. Knoedler & Co., Ltd, at Henry Brown’s sale, Sotheby's, London, March 25th, 1947 (no. 21).

Deep dish with rounded cavetto and flat rim painted in underglaze cobalt blue. In the centre, bordered by a double circle, a scrolling branch of peonies with two large blooms. On the cavetto there is a lotus scroll and, on the rim eight fruit and flowers sprays include pomegranate, peach, persimmon, chrysanthemum, camellia and gardenia. On the outside there is a more stylised lotus scroll.

This is an excellent example of fifteenth century Chinese porcelain. It is difficult to date precisely for it is not easy to distinguish articles from the Yongle period (1403-24), which rarely bore the reign mark, from those of the Xuande era, when the nianhao or mark appeared regularly on official products.

The high quality of workmanship and the refining of the decorative style as revealed in this piece, also reflect official court interest in Jingdezshen products at the time of the Xuande emperor.

Provenance: H.F. Parfitt Esq. collection. Acquired by Calouste Gulbenkian, through Knoedler, at H.F. Parfitt’s sale, Sotheby's, London, February 8th, 1946 (no. 37).

Set with a modified cut-cornered rectangular-cut fancy gray-blue diamond, weighing approximately 5.17 carats, flanked on either side by a trapeze-cut diamond, mounted in platinum. Estimate $800,000 – $1,200,000

With report 16242445 dated 11 January 2014 from the Gemological Institute of America stating that the diamond is fancy gray-blue, natural color, VVS2 clarity; accompanied by a working diagram indicating that the clarity of the diamond may be potentially internally flawless

Accompanied by a supplemental letter from the Gemological Institute of America stating that the diamond has been determined to be a type IIb diamond. Type IIb diamonds are very rare in nature (from our experience, less than one half of one percent) and contain small amounts of boron that can give rise to a blue or gray coloration. An unusual property of type IIb diamonds is that they are semi-conductors and conduct electricity. Historically, the ancient mines of India produced occasional blue diamonds but today the most significant source is limited to the Cullinan (formerly Premier) Mine in South Africa. Among famous gem diamonds, the 70.21 carat Idol's Eye and the 45.52 carat Hope, are examples of type IIb
