1965 Mercedes-Benz 250SE Convertible - 3.5L, Frame-Off RestorationEstimate $115,000 - $140,000. Photo by David Newhardt, Courtesy of Mecum Auctions.

The Mercedes-Benz tradition of imposing, elegant and fast convertibles goes back to the pre-war era. The magnificent models produced in the three decades after World War II have remained popular to this day.

This particular example began life as a 1965 250SE convertible, then powered by a 2.5L six-cylinder engine, but now sports a 3.5L V-8 engine. Originally delivered in Germany, this car underwent a bare-metal, frame-off restoration in Hamburg, Germany in the early 1980s. The restoration took nearly two years, with parts sourced from the Mercedes-Benz factory. In the course of the work, the external appearance was expertly transformed to be indistinguishable from the ultimate Mercedes-Benz series of the 1960s, where the final iteration of the “fintail” was fitted with a new 3.5L V-8 engine. This version had a lower, wider radiator in order to accommodate the engine, giving the car a more modern look, in concert with vertical twin headlights, which were fashionable at the time.

During its restoration, the interior was trimmed in new Cream leather upholstery from Mercedes-Benz to offset its Adriatic Blue exterior. Further updates included a new wooden dash panel, rewiring and electrical items. On the exterior, the new chrome brightwork and lights were sourced from factory. A reworking of the suspension and tires followed. Finally, the car was fitted with a superb drivetrain from an original 280SE 3.5. The superb V-8 propelled the car to a factory-rated 120 MPH top speed. The car has spent much of its life since the work was completed being taken to events and shows or kept in an air-conditioned garage in Henderson, Nevada.

The car has factory air conditioning, power steering, power door locks and an electric antenna. With a mohair convertible top this Mercedes-Benz is suitable for year-round use.

1965 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible -  396/425 HP, NCRS Duntov Award. Estimate $120,000 - $135,000. Photo by David Newhardt, Courtesy of Mecum Auctions.

It all started with the introduction of the mid-year Corvette in 1963. Sporting a completely redesigned body and chassis featuring an independent rear suspension, the quintessential American sports car was ready to take on the world. In 1965 the ante was truly upped with the introduction of the first of the big blocks, the L78 396 “Turbo Jet” engine, one that furthered a legend that continues to this day. The 1965 models were milestone Corvettes in many ways. It was the first year for standard disc brakes, the last year for the original Fuel Injection and the only year for the 396 nestled under a newly designed big-block hood. This beast pumped out a factory-rated 425 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque with 11:1 compression, forged rotating assembly, a hot solid-lifter cam and a Holley four-barrel carburetor on an aluminum dual-plane intake manifold. Only 2,157 Corvettes with the mighty 396 engines were built. All 1965 Corvettes received new rocker panels, a blacked-out grille with horizontal bars and functional vertical louvers behind the front wheels. Additional upgrades to the 1965 model year included redesigned seats, standard four-wheel disc brakes, new dashboard gauges and an optional side exhaust, power antenna and telescoping steering wheel. This stunning late-production example is finished in Milano Maroon with a Black interior and Black soft top. It has received the coveted Zora Arkus Duntov Mark of Excellence, a National Top Flight award scoring 98.2 and numerous other honors. There’s no doubt that the awards were the result of a meticulous frame-off restoration. To keep up its luster, this beauty was recently repainted and thoroughly cleaned. This Corvette has covered a mere 23,371 miles and is optioned with the 396/425 HP big block, Teakwood steering wheel and goldline tires combined with 4-speed manual transmission and the original 3.70:1 Positraction rear end. This is truly a special example of a mid-year roadster.

1966 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Roadster - 4.2/265 HP, 5-SpeedEstimate $285,000 - $315,000. Photo by David Newhardt, Courtesy of Mecum Auctions.

Jaguar had a deep well of experience to draw upon in creating the revolutionary XKE that debuted at the Geneva Auto Show in 1961. The new E-Type followed the Le Mans-winning D-Type in its basic design, which centered on a steel monocoque chassis with front and rear subframes, but it was the direct descendent of a lightweight alloy-bodied car raced at Le Mans in 1960. Nothing like it had ever been produced, and its performance was unmatched even by vehicles costing much more. The slippery body was more than pretty, it provided fabulous aerodynamics to slide through the wind, and the powerful six-cylinder engines easily propelled them to astonishing speeds, even to today's standards. While it's easy to say the E-Type just popped up overnight, it's not true. The E-Type was the result of years of racing development with the Jaguar C-Type and D-Type race cars, which the E-Type largely resembles. The drivetrains were similar in many respects, contributing to the E-Types overall performance prowess, and helped the car become a performance leader. Styling over the years was refined as well as interior accoutrements until ultimately the E-Type had run its course by 1974. But, the E-Type would not go quietly into that good night, and today, the model is just as revered and respected as it was when it was new.

Boasting such desirable Series I features as covered headlights, comfortable bucket seats, competition-style toggle switches, excellent instrumentation, a center console and arm rest, this 1966 Jaguar XKE Series 1 roadster was the recipient of a documented comprehensive restoration by a group of Jaguar professionals. The car was stripped to bare metal, painted, wet sanded and buffed for a virtually flawless finish. A New Black BASS interior was installed along with a new soft top on the restored original bows. The engine and suspension were rebuilt, all the systems were gone through, and it was fitted with new chromed wire wheels and radial tires. The car’s exhilarating performance benefits from several upgrades including headers, a 5-speed fully synchronized transmission, stainless steel exhaust, cooling fan, Gaz adjustable shocks, Wilwood disc brakes with braided stainless brake flex lines, a high-torque starter, alloy radiator and poly bushings throughout. This classic early E-Type was recently detailed and well sorted by marque specialists Classic Showcase of Oceanside, California.

1967 Shelby 427 Cobra Roadster -  CSX3356, S/C Equipment. Estimate $1,000,000 - $1,250,000. Photo by David Newhardt, Courtesy of Mecum Auctions.

Invoiced to Shelby American on December 14, 1966, Shelby Cobra CSX3356 was first sold to Paradise Ford of Scottsdale, Arizona, at an inventory reduction price of “$1,000 off dealer cost” and was delivered to Arizona by truck on October 2, 1967. In its original configuration it was equipped with the single four-barrel 427 “side oiler” engine and finished in Red with a Black interior. The Shelby Registry notes that its early history is unknown, but an unidentified owner in the San Antonio, Texas, area offered it for sale in the fall of 1980. The ad described “427 Cobra CSX3356. 7 aluminum wheels, 4 magnesium wheels, chrome side pipes, 200 miles on balanced, blueprinted 427 side-oiler, special competition transmission. Just painted. An exceptional Cobra for someone who is looking for JUST THAT. First time sale since 1970. Expensive – serious inquiries please.”

Forristall’s GT Cars of Houston, Texas, then advertised the car for sale in the spring of 1981, describing it as “possibly the finest example in the world, only 17,000 documented miles since new…optional S/C equipment.” It was purchased by Stockton, California, resident Robert Panella of Panella Trucking fame. Panella delivered the car to noted Cobra specialist Mike McCluskey of Torrance, California, for a no-expense-spared restoration involving nearly every facet. McCluskey rebuilt the car from the bare refinished frame, overhauling the entire suspension, fuel, cooling and electrical systems. The work also included a blueprint rebuild of the engine and transmission by Dennis Cann and an overhaul of the differential by McCluskey, who also repainted the car Metallic Blue with White stripes, then brought it to full S/C specifications, including a revised dash and trunk, early tail lights, an oil-cooler scoop, widened front flares and rear-wheel arch lips and relocating the battery to the trunk. The instruments were also rebuilt and the odometer returned to zero miles; the present mileage reading accounts for the distance travelled since the restoration by McCluskey. Mr. Panella enjoyed the Cobra for several years as part of a varied collection of important automobiles. In 1996, he contracted a noted exotic automobile broker to facilitate the sale of the Cobra to Harry Mathews of Arvada, Colorado, who owned what was widely acknowledged as the world’s finest collection of McLaren racing and road cars.

The broker then arranged the sale of the car to a previous owner in 2007. It has been enjoyed sparingly since then, mostly during brief forays up and down the California coast. It has been maintained as regularly as needed and without regard for expense, with most work being contracted to Oakland Shelby specialist Jack Schroll. In 2013 it was returned to McCluskey for a full service. McCluskey replaced the inner spherical ball bearing in the right A-arm and aligned the rear suspension, replaced the hood jamb rubber, Stewart Warner water pump, clutch slave cylinder, oil filter and water temperature sending unit. He also repaired the fuel tank and changed the brake and drivetrain fluids.

CSX3356 remains in exceptional condition and presents a unique opportunity for collectors to acquire an investment-grade big-block Shelby Cobra.
