LONDON.- A rare medieval sword taken from the Mamluk Arsenal at Alexandria was the top item in Bonhams sale of Antique Arms and Armour on November 28th in London. The sword, estimated to sell for £40,000 to £60,000, was eventually bought for £163,250 after stiff competition in a sale that made a total of £1m with 90% sold.

imageThe medieval Crusader Italian-made sword was given as a gift to the Mamluk rulers of Alexandria by the Christian ruler of Cyprus and Jerusalem,King Peter I as part of a gift sealing a treaty.

King Peter I, the King of Cyprus and Jerusalem, launched the last Crusade in 1362 against the Muslim Mamluk Empire in the region. A fleet set out from Cyprus and proved victorious, taking the city of Alexandria with immense amounts of plunder returned to Cyprus, including this sword. Such was the treasure and weapons taken from the captured city that many of the overloaded ships had to jettison cargo.

image__1_David Williams, Head of Bonhams Antique Arms and Armour Department, says: “The fascination of this sword is that it has survived some six centuries having been gifted by a Christian King to a Muslim ruler and kept in the famed Alexandrian armoury and then taken by force by Crusaders and returned to Europe. It is a remarkable survivor of the Crusader period.”

image__2_The sword has a flat tapering double-edged blade 92.5 cm. long and overall with the hilt 115.7cm. The weapon bears an inscription that reads: 'Hubs Khazain al-Silah bi thughri al-Iskandariyya ayyam al-Sayfi Faris al [...d.]', 'Donation to the armoury in the frontier city of Alexandria in the days of al-Sayfi Faris al- [Muhammadi]. Amir Faris was an inspector in 840H, corresponding to 1436-7 AD. Only three other swords appear to be recorded inscribed in the name of the Amir Faris. One in a private charitable foundation, another in Leeds Castle, Kent and the other in the Military Museum at Istanbul.

A stunning array of death-dealing swords from the Medieval period and earlier, including Viking weapons, formed the main thrust of Bonhams sale of Antique Arms and Armour on November 28th in Knightsbridge.

David Williams, Director of Arms and Armour at Bonhams, comments: “Many of these rare and remarkable weapons would have been used in battle. The scarring and damage goes some way to confirm this, though the years have also taken their toll.”

Among the collection of swords in the sale from the distinguished Danish collector the late E.A. Christensen, there were some seven Viking swords dating from the 9th and tenth centuries when the Vikings were invading the British Isles on a regular basis.

Viking swords with Ulfberht inscriptions have been found across Europe, Scandinavia, Britain and Russia. It is thought that the name is either that of a long-lived family manufactory or a group of closely associated workshops, the possible origin being Frankland, in the area of modern Solingen. One hundred and twenty-two examples were identified by Alfred Geibig in his highly detailed survey published in 1991

For a synopsis of Geibig's work and a further analytical study of the subject see Michael R. Gorman, 'Ulfbreht: Innovation and Imitation in Early Medieval Swords', The sixteenth Park Lane Arms Fair Guide, February 1999, pp. 7-12

The Viking Age spanned the late 8th to 11th centuries.

The Viking destruction of Lindisfarne was reported by a Northumbrian scholar who wrote: "Never before has such an atrocity been seen". More than any other single event, the attack on Lindisfarne cast a shadow on the perception of the Vikings for the next twelve centuries.

MILAN.- The highlight of the sale was a small canvas (cm 30x20) by Giorgio Morandi, Fiori, 1952, which duplicated its estimate (190,000 -250,000) and sold at 420.750 Euro, after a brilliant competition from collectors.

The magical work, Interno metafisico con stabilimento, by Giorgio De Chirico, a “painting within a painting”, a fine example of the series of metaphysical interiors, achieved 216.750 Euro.

Also by de Chirico was the 1933 canvas, La Danse - when the painter worked as set and costume designer for “I Puritani” by Bellini for the 1933 edition of the Maggio Fiorentino - was bought by a private Italian collector.

The Alberto Burri works in the sale were particularly successful, demonstrating the good reaction by the market; the 1954 Sacco fetched 300,750 Euro and the 1954 Combustione sold at 276.750 Euro.

Bonalumi and Castellani, included in the catalogue with works dated from the Seventies to the Eighties, were highly disputed by national and international buyers.

From one of the protagonist of Arte Povera: a 1966 work by Paolini, Alceo, which sold, after lively competition from bidders, at 210.750 Euro, well over the 90,000-120,000 Euro estimate.

Superficie 151, the beautiful canvas by Giuseppe Capogrossi, dated 1954, achieved 90.750 Euro. In 1954 the artist had a dedicated room at the Venice Biennale and won the “Premio Editore Giulio Einaudi”.

Good results for the other two lots by Capogrossi (lot 133 and lot 135).To be noted: the Peggy Guggenheim in Venice is dedicating a retrospective to the artist (Sept. 2012-Feb.2013). Among the works by Gianni Colombo – all sold in the sale -,we mention Spazio Elastico – 16 quarati- a beautiful cm 120x120 square, sold at 58.350 Euro.

World Auction Record for a sculpture by Alik Cavaliere, sold at 75.150 Euro. A similar sculpture is exhibited in the collection of the brand New Museum of Milan, Le Gallerie d’Italia.

Jaume Plensa (Spain, born 1955), Spiegel, 2010. Painted stainless steel. Toledo Museum of Art. Partial gift by an anonymous donor and Museum purchase, 2012. Photos by Andrew Weber.

TOLEDO, OH.- The Toledo Museum of Art has acquired Spiegel, a monumental, two-part stainless steel sculpture by the acclaimed Spanish sculptor Jaume (juh-MAY) Plensa. Its acquisition was made possible by a generous local donor who wishes to remain anonymous.

Showcased last year in an exhibition of the artist’s work at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in West Bretton, Wakefield, UK, the work is being installed in the Georgia and David K. Welles Sculpture Garden which surrounds the Museum. Composed of two figures, each measuring just over 12 feet high and lit from within, the sculpture will be located in front of a small ridge near the intersection of Monroe Street and Collingwood Boulevard.

The word spiegel means mirror in German. Plensa’s Spiegel features two identical figures mirroring one another. Created in 2010, it is made of white-painted steel latticework consisting of individual letters welded together—making no legible sense—from eight different alphabets. The different international alphabets are used to define and visually unite the two seated individuals that are bound together in a silent exchange.

The sculpture makes a beautiful introduction to the Museum’s campus because it shows two figures in apparent dialogue, much as we hope to bring visitors into dialogue with works of art,” said Museum Director Brian Kennedy. “Both figures are constructed from alphabetic symbols, which evokes our ‘Teaching Visual Literacy’ objective and even the work’s title creates a material and spatial dialogue with our Glass Pavilion across the street.”

Plensa was born in 1955 in Barcelona, Spain, and currently has residences in both Paris and Barcelona. His sculptures can be seen in public spaces world-wide, including Spain, France, Japan and Germany. In the United States, his most widely known sculpture is Crown Fountain at Millennium Park in Chicago.

His works regularly are shown in galleries and museums across Europe, the United States and Japan. His work was most recently seen in the 2012 International Contemporary Art Fair in Paris.

Plensa’s sculptures inspire wonderment and great attachment as well as interaction among people of all ages. This work should prove no different,” said Amy Gilman, associate director and curator of contemporary art at the Museum. “Spiegel will attract notice and engagement. At night the two bodies are lit from within and will be visible even when the Museum is closed.”

The artist has been invited to visit Toledo for a formal dedication of the work and Masters Series lecture next spring.
