Meiping vase, porcelain painted in underglaze blue with lotus scrolls, China, Yuan dynasty (1279-1368). Height: 26.7 cm. Purchased with the assistance of The Art Fund, the Vallentin Bequest, Sir Percival David and the Universities China Committee. C.66-1935. Victoria & Albert Museum © V&A Images

Vase, of meiping form with high rounded shoulder tapering to the foot, narrow short neck with protruding lip. Porcelain painted in underglaze blue of different tones, from dull blackish to pale blue. On the body, a broad band of lotus scrolls, above and below which is a double border of petal pattern. Round the neck with classic scroll. The base is unglazed.

This meiping vase is decorated in a classic Xuande style, with a lotus scroll undulating around the main body. It is flanked above and below by stylised petal shaped lappets.

The underglaze cobalt blue decoration has misfired, probably due to problems with temperature or air control in the kiln during firing. Instead of turning a deep blue the cobalt has turned greyish black. The tiny decorative scroll around the neck, is the only area of decoration that fired to the desired blue colour.

Despite this obvious flaw it was clearly still consdidered to be an object of value.

Ink and water pot of porcelain, decorated with underglaze cobalt blue. Round vessel in drum form, with two raised ribs and four unglazed animal masks round the outside. In the top surface are six round holes, round the edge. Five of them lead to small, circular cavity containers for solid ink sticks. The sixth lets right through into the hollow interior, which would have been filled with water; the owner would have dipped his brush in here to moisten it, and then mixed solid ink form one of the other five containers. On the flat top of the vessel is a well-painted scene of a scholar on horseback in a windy spring landscape, accompanied by his servant. Round the sides at top and bottom, are two rows of blue dots within parallel lines, simulated nailheads on a drum. In the central band is a lotus scroll. The flat base, and the low, square footring, are unglazed. On the base are two paper stickers recording the vessel's history of the exhibition in England: "Oriental Ceramic Society Exhibition Ming Blue & White 1946 no. 52" and "Oriental Ceramic Society 1954 exhibition 121".

Covered Enameled Jar. Ming dynasty, Tianqi-Chongzhen period, 1620-1640. Porcelain with underglaze blue and overglaze enamels, 3 11/16 in. (9.4 cm). Acquired by William T. or Henry Walters. 49.759. The Walters Art Museum.

This is an example of blue and white porcelain probably made for export to Japan. Blue and White porcelain in China came about as a result of the combination of the Chinese porcelain tradition with the trade in cobalt blue from Persia. Porcelain is a hard white ceramic composed of white-china clay, called kaolin, and refined porcelain stone, or petuntse. When fired together, these materials fuse to create a hard, vitrified ceramic. Blue and White porcelain is the successor to the Chinese Qingbai and Shufu traditions that preceded it, or ceramics with a white glaze and a slightly blue or blue-green tint. To achieve the Blue and White decorative style, cobalt underglaze is applied to the porcelain; it is then covered in clear glaze and fired. Cobalt was used by Persian potters for centuries before its import to China. It was introduced in approximately 1325 A.D. through with Persian merchant communities established along the Chinese coast. Following the introduction of this new, exotic decorative style, the city of Jingdezhen, known as the porcelain capital of China, began producing Blue and White porcelain wares with imported cobalt. By the middle of the sixteenth century, trade with Japan stimulated production of porcelain wares with cobalt underglaze.
