Lot 39.

Lot 34. A rare inscribed celadon jade and zitan 'nine dragon' hat stand, dated by inscription to the cyclical year of dingji of the Qianlong period, corresponding to 1737 and of the period. Estimate £30,000 – £50,000 ($43,380 - $72,300). Photo Christie's Image Ltd 2016.

The top of the upper section is intricately carved with two five-clawed dragons amidst clouds, surrounding a roundel containing the characters Qianlong yu yong, 'for the imperial use of the Qianlong Emperor'. The underside is decorated with two further dragons. The zitan shaft is inscribed and gilt-decorated with a long inscription, separated by a jade mid-section carved with a dragon. The base is decorated with four further dragons. The jade is of a celadon tone with some darker and lighter inclusions. 10 5/8 in. (27 cm.) high

NotesThe long inscription contains an imperial poem composed by the Qianlong Emperor which is published in Qing Gaozong Yuzhi Shiwen Quanji (1), leshantang, vol. 1, The National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1976. This morally didactic poem states that rectitude is the foundation of everything, a principle bestowed by the heavens that should be followed by all those on earth. It purports that men should strive to achieve rectitude of the highest level, despite our weaknesses caused by selfishness and ignorance.

Marbre - H. 91 cm, L. 38 cm, P. 42 cm.

ProvenanceMatthiesen Fine Art Gallery, Londres, octobre 1978 Paris, collection privée

Notes: This fierce-looking animal was interred in Han dynasty tombs and probably deemed to ward off the evil spirits from the afterlife of the tomb occupant. This animal may be one of the fantastic animals described in the Book of Later Han, 後漢書, compiled in the fifth century, as creatures providing contacts with the spirit world, heralding in good fortune, keeping evil at bay, or appearing when auspicious events where about to occur.

NotesPottery figures, such as the present one, were incorporated within a complex of furnishing that presented the deceased with a miniaturised universe where they were deemed to continue their after life existence. Underground chambered tombs were thus constructed for the highest ranking members of the Tang society and decorated in a way that suggested a courtly compound consisting of sumptuous halls and luxuriant gardens. Providing the dead with the necessities they needed in their afterlife was viewed as a way to prompt their benign conduct towards their living offspring. Gracious figures of servants, courtiers, musicians, ladies engaging in leisurely pursuits and female dancers, thus complemented the colourful frescoes, depicting the frivolous moments of daily life that reflected the prosperity of the time. For references, see J.Rawson, 'Changes in the representation of life and the afterlife as illustrated by the content of tombs of the T'ang and Song period', in Smith, M.K.H.(ed.), Arts of the Sung and Yuan, New York, 1996, pp.23-43.

Institutions were set up to oversee the training and performances of music and dances in the Imperial court such as the Great Music Bureau and the Drums and Pipes Bureau. Tang court music was mainly based on the tuning of the Kuchean lute and drum and thousands of musicians housed within the walls of the Imperial Palace were trained to perform orchestral pieces drawing from Central Asian influences. For reference, see L. Picken, Music from the Tang Court, Cambridge, 1985.

Marbre blanc. Signé et daté JJ Foucou, 1771. H. 79 cm, L. 48 cm, P. 38 cm
