CARTIER
The founder, Louis-François Cartier, established Cartier in Paris in 1847. His grandsons, Louis, Pierre, and Jacques, took over the brand and brought it to international fame.

In 1899, Louis relocated the Paris branch to Rue de la Paix where the prestigious location and cosmopolitan hub helped attract famous nobilities and aristocrats from all over the world. Shortly after, Jacques led the British branch and developed ties with Indian royalty such as the Maharaja of Patiala and King Edward VII of England; in fact, for his coronation in 1902, King Edward VII ordered 27 tiaras and in 1904 issued a royal warrant to Cartier. Various other warrants across courts in Europe soon followed. In 1909 and 1911, Maison Cartier opened stores in New York and India, beginning its rise to global status.

With royal and celebrity clientele, Cartier has produced countless memorable pieces, such as the Patiala Necklace made for Maharaja of Patiala. This piece was made with Burmese rubies and 2,930 diamonds including the seventh largest diamond in the world, the ‘De Beers’, as a centrepiece. The ‘De Beers’ diamond weighed 428 carats pre-cut, and 234.65 carats after being set.

BUCCELLATI
The Buccellati brand dates back to 1919 when Mario Buccellati opened his first jewellery boutique in Milan. Having acquired years of experience working for renowned jeweller Beltrami & Besnati, the brand became reputable for its quality pieces. Gianmaria Buccellati, the second generation of the brand, followed in his father’s footsteps in becoming a master goldsmith himself and successfully established his own brand of jewellery in 1971 after his father’s death. He inherited his father’s distinctive style of using texture-engraving, a technique that transforms gold and silver into wonderful creations with a tactile feel similar to tulle and damask.
The brand expanded worldwide, earning several awards for his work as a goldsmith and entrepreneur. In 2011, Gianmaria and his brothers united under the Buccellati brand after merging their companies to further expand business prospects. To this day the company remains a family-run business which continues to create innovative, one-of-a-kind creations.

AMSTERDAMParis, with all its creative hotspots, exhibitions and training opportunities, exerted a magical attraction throughout the nineteenth century on artists from all corners of the world. New generations left their native countries to go to where the action was.

The exhibition The Dutch in Paris 1789-1914 at the Van Gogh Museum (Oct. 13, 2017, to January 7, 2018) will present Paris with the work of Dutch artists like George Hendrik Breitner, Kees van Dongen, Piet Mondrian, and, of course, Vincent van Gogh. Not only did French artists influence their work, the Dutch made their mark on contemporary artists in France too. For the first time these works are shown in conjunction with each other.

The Dutch in Paris can be read as a passionate love story between the Netherlands and France: painters take the viewer on a journey to the ever-changing French capital and show us the city with their eyes and hearts. The chosen works explore Paris and its development through images of Haussmann’s famous boulevards, nightspots like the Folies Bergères and districts such as Montmartre.

Also, from October 27, 2017, to January 7, 2018, The Dutch in Barbizon. Maris, Mauve, Weissenbruch will open in The Mesdag Collection in The Hague. This exhibition is an extra chapter to The Dutch in Paris 1789 - 1914 and is mainly focused on Jacob Maris.

The Dutch in Barbizon recounts the story of French artists (primarily) from the Hague School, who travelled to the area around the village of Barbizon in France. This exhibition is dedicated to the Dutch response to the renowned Barbizon School.
