Daniel Shipp is a Sydney-based photographer interested in creating images with a narrative. His dark series titles ‘Botanical Inquiry’ is very much inspired by film frames, contrasting raw, urban settings with nature. Optical manipulations were achieved thanks to the analogue machine Shipp has constructed himself. Instead of using Photoshop, he has worked with the perspective of the camera to craft the unsettling visuals. The winner of the Magnum Photo Awards Fine Art Category 2017, Shipp said of the project:
“In these compositions the physical characteristics of the unremarkable plants I have collected become storytelling elements which, when staged against the backdrop of common urban environments, explore the quietly menacing effect that humans have on the natural world. From a subjective and ambiguous point of view we witness the plants’ ability to adapt and survive.”
