on four bracket feet, body and lid applied with twisting vines and tendrils bearing a gold leaf and copper gourd, the body also applied with copper and mokume dragonfly and butterflies, one side engraved with monogram CL under coronet, pierced handle, carved nephrite finial, gilt interior; marked on base and numbered 5048-8940/741; height 4 1/2 in., 11.4cm; 7oz 10dwt, 230g. Of blue gauze, featuring nine couched gilt thread five-clawed dragons chasing flaming pearls, amongst clouds, bats, flying cranes and further auspicious symbols, above mountains, crashing waves and a lishui hem, with horseshoe cuffs and edging bands in embroidered black gauze and gilt filigree buttons, 141 x 209cm. Estimate£1,500 - 2,000 (€1,800 - 2,400)

Provenance: Acquired in China around the time of the First World War, by a Royal Naval Submarine Officer and thence by descent.

Centre front opening, of navy satin, an applied rank badge to the back and front depicting the egret of the sixth civil official, worked in couched gilt threads, the front also worked with two side-facing four-clawed dragons chasing flaming pearls and a front-facing dragon to the back, amongst clouds, bats, flowers and auspicious symbols, above waves and mountains, with a knotted and tasselled silk fringe, 107 x 59cm. Estimate£300 - 500 (€360 - 600)

Composed of 35 baroque cultured pearls measuring approximately 18.9 to 12.4 mm, the trefoil-shaped clasp set with three old European-cut diamonds, the largest weighing 3.92 carats, the other two weighing approximately 2.85 and 2.70 carats, framed by round and single-cut diamonds weighing approximately 1.25 carats, length 21½ inches, the clasp numbered 15421, with French assay and workshop marks; the clasp circa 1920. The light grayish brown drop-shaped pearls measuring approximately 11.3 to 11.9 by 18.2 mm and 12.0 to 12.0 by 16.9 mm, topped and suspended by round, marquise-shaped and rose-cut diamonds weighing approximately 3.10 carats, topped by two button-shaped pearls of similar hue measuring approximately 7.0 and 6.7 mm. Estimation 600,000 — 800,000 USD. Unsold.

Accompanied by SSEF report no. 65748 stating that the pearls are natural, saltwater, with no indications of color modification.
Please note that the button-shaped pearls have not been tested for natural origin.
