A purple-splashed jun-glazed 'bubble' bowl, Song-Yuan dynasty (960-1368)

Lot 4051. A purple-splashed Jun-glazed 'bubble' bowl, Song-Yuan dynasty (960-1368), 3 1/4 in. (8.2 cm.) diam. Estimate HKD 700,000 - HKD 900,000Price realised HKD 1,580,000© Christie's Images Ltd 2012

The bowl has rounded sides rising from a short straight foot. It is covered inside and out with a thick glaze of pale milky-blue tone thinning to lavender and then mushroom-brown at the mouth rim, with an irregularly-shaped splash of reddish-purple. The thick glaze on the exterior falls short of the foot to expose the pale brown stoneware; Japanese wood box.

ExhibitedDavid Lin & Co., From Subtlety to Splendor, Taipei, 2004, pl. 25

NoteThe prominent splashes of purple, red or green on Jun-glazed wares were produced by potters who deliberately added copper to the glaze. Datable examples of Jun-glazed bowls with splashes were found in the tomb of Feng Daozhen (d. 1265) near Datong, Shanxi, excavated in 1958, and illustrated in Wenwu, 1962, no. 10, pp. 34-42, figs. 7-10.

Small Jun-glazed bowls with splashes both on the inside and out are highly sought after. Examples of 'bubble' bowls, mostly of below 9 cm. in diameter, include one in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Porcelain of the Song Dynasty, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1996, p. 246, pl. 222 (8.3 cm. diam.); another in the collection of the Percival David Foundation, now housed at the British Museum, illustrated by S. Pierson, Song Ceramics: Objects of Admiration, London, 2003, p. 61, pl. 20 (PDF 45B) (8.6 cm. diam.); one in the Metropolitan Museum, illustrated by S. Valenstein, A Handbook of Chinese Ceramics, New York, 1975, p. 87, no. 80 (50.145.316) (8.6 cm. diam.).

the deep rounded sides rising from a short straight foot to an incurved rim, covered overall with a rich glossy lavender-blue glaze suffused with irregular purple and dark blue splashes to the interior and exterior, the glaze falling short of the foot to reveal the dark brown body

ProvenanceJ.J. Lally, New York.

NotePurple-splashed 'Jun' bowls of this classic Northern Song shape are remarkable for their understated elegance, offset by splendid colouration which displays a range of blue and lavender tones. Its vibrant colours, glossy glaze and rounded shape create the illusion of a soap bubble, which gave these bowls the name 'bubble bowl'.

Two 'Jun' splashed bubble bowls from the Edward T. Chow collection, amongst the best extant examples, were sold in these rooms, 16th December 1980, lots 264 and 265, and again in our Hong Kong rooms, the former, 19th May 1980, lot 209, and the latter, 7th June 2000, lot 93. Further examples sold at auction include one from the Schoenlicht and H.M. Knight collections, sold in these rooms, 13th December 1955, lot 76, and again in our Hong Kong rooms, 18th May 1982, lot 109, now in the Matsuoka Museum of Art, Tokyo; and two sold in these rooms, one from the collections of Richard Bennett and George Eumorfopoulos, 9th November 2006, lot 55, and the other, 12th June 2003, lot 107.

well-potted with gently rounded sides slightly curved in at the rim, resting on a neatly finished foot of wedge-shaped section, the smoothly rounded interior applied with a rich milky-blue glaze suffused with bubbles and applied with two vivid purple splashes, thinning at the rim to a buff tone and stopping in an uneven line above the foot to reveal the chocolate-brown body

Provenance: Collection of Millicent Rogers (1902 - 1953).

NoteThe present bowl of classic Northern Song form is exquisite for its rich thick glaze and bright coloration that displays a range of blue and lavender tones. The purple splashes form the illusion of soap bubbles, hence the name given to vessels of this type 'bubble bowls'.

Compare two famous 'Jun' bubble bowls formerly in the collection of Edward T. Chow, sold in our London rooms, 16th December 1980, lots 264 and 265, and again in our Hong Kong rooms, the former on 19th May 1987, lot 209, and later in the collection of T.T. Tsui; the latter on 7th June 2000, lot 93. Another related bowl from the collection of Sir Percival David and now in the British MuseumLondon, is illustrated in Margaret Medley, The Chinese Potter, Oxford, 1976, fig. 83.

The Palace Museum in Beijing also has a similar bowl in its collection published in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Porcelain of the Song Dynasty (II), Hong Kong, 1996, pl. 225; while further two examples can be found in the Baur Collection in Geneva, included in John Ayers, The Baur Collection. Chinese Ceramics, Geneva, 1969, nos. A31 and A32.

Lot 308. A purple-splashed 'Jun''bubble' bowl, Song dynasty, diameter 3 1/2 in., 8.8 cm. Estimate 60,000 — 80,000 USD. Lot sold 62,500 USDPhoto: Sotheby's.

with steeply rounded sides and contracted rim, springing from a neatly finished foot of wedge-shaped section, covered on the exterior with a pale-blue glaze and vividly decorated with several 'fish-like' splashes in lavender-blue, the interior liberally splashed with irregular blushes of magenta and lavender, drained at the rim to a deep buff and pooling short of the foot, later applied with Japanese gold lacquer restoration

Note: It is rare to find a 'jun' bubble bowl with this striking combination of intense and rich splashes on the interior and the unusual arrangement of smaller splashes on the exterior, reminiscent of the bowl from the Collection of Sir David Home, Bt., exhibited at the Oriental Ceramics Society exhibition of Sung Dynasty Wares, Chun and Brown Glazes, London, 1952, Catalogue no. 157 and sold in our Hong Kong rooms 24th November 1987, lot 5. For intensity of coloration, compare the two extraordinary bowls from the Edward T. Chow Collection sold in our London rooms, 16th December 1980, lots 264 and 265, and again in our Hong Kong rooms, the former on 19th May 1987, lot 209, and later in the T.T. Tsui Collection, the latter on 7th June 2000, lot 93.

Similar bowls are illustrated in the Eumorfopoulos Collection, Catalogue, vol. 2, pl. A31 and A32; and in the Matsuoka Collection, Catalogue, 1983, pl. 36, formerly in the Schoenlicht Collection, sold in our London rooms, 13th December 1955, lot 76, and in the H. M. Knight Collection, and sold again in Hong Kong, 18th May 1982, lot 109.

well potted, with steeply rounded sides on a neatly finished foot incurved towards the rim, the interior applied with a finely bubbled milky-blue glaze, vividly splashed in lavender-blue shading to purplish-red in five swirls, the exterior with a striking crescent shaped-splash amidst other shadowy streaks, pooling above the foot to reveal the chocolate color ware, draining to a buff at the rim

NoteAmong the genre of Song dynasty ceramics, 'Jun' bubble bowls are perhaps the most tactile and personal of items, as the small rounded sides and unctuous glaze allow the bowls to conform perfectly to the hands.

Similar examples are included in some of the world's most prestigious collections of Chinese ceramics, including one in the Palace Museum in Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Porcelain of the Song Dynasty (I), Hong Kong, 1996, pl. 222. Compare also a 'Jun' bubble bowl in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, originally also from the Eumorfopoulos collection, illustrated in Rose Kerr, Song Dynasty Ceramics, London, 2004, pl. 26. Two famous 'Jun' bubble bowls from the Edward T. Chow collection, perhaps the best extant examples, both sold in our London rooms, 16th December 1980, lots 264 and 265, and again in these rooms, the former on 19th May 1987, lot 209, and later in the T.T. Tsui collection; the latter on 7th June 2000, lot 93.

According to Rose Kerr, ibid., p. 34, the splashes found on 'Jun' wares are made with the application of copper brushwork to dry glazes in broad strokes or washes, which then merged with the bluish 'Jun' glazes at full heat. This copper painting provided a striking contrast to the thick bright blue glaze beneath giving each vessel decorated in this manner its unique design.

Dinh Q. Lê (Vietnamese, born 1968), Untitled, from the series Cambodia: Splendor and Darkness, 1998. C-print and linen tape, 63 × 44 in. (160 × 111.8 cm). Acquired through the George and Mary Rockwell Fund, 2014.001© 2017 Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University

Dinh Q. Lê is the most established Vietnamese-American artist to date, having had a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (The Farmers and the Helicopters, 2009) and shown at dOCUMENTA 13. He was born in Ha Tien, a Vietnamese town near the border with Cambodia, and in the late 1970s he and his family settled in the United States as refugees. Cambodia: Splendor and Darkness (1994–99) marked a significant moment in his practice, occurring around the time that Lê decided to return to Vietnam and make his home in Ho Chi Minh City. It is the first major series in which he used his signature method of interweaving strips of photographs, following bamboo mat weaving techniques he learned from his aunt during his childhood. Here he juxtaposes two different images associated with Cambodia: bas-reliefs of battle scenes from the twelfth-century temple of Angkor Wat, and photographs of prisoners from the Khmer Rouge detention center known as S-21 (now the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum). Lê creates a dialogue between two episodes of Cambodian history that he sees as intrinsically rooted in violence, producing an alternative means of memorializing these victims.

Ewer with designs of a makara and a parrot, 11th–13th century, Vietnam, Thanh Hóa province

Ewer with designs of a makara and a parrot, 11th–13th century, Vietnam, Thanh Hóa province. Glazed stoneware, 9 13/16 x 9 1/16 in. (25 x 23 cm). Acquired through the George and Mary Rockwell Fund, 2006.029 © 2017 Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University

During the years of independence from China during the Ly and Tran dynasties, Vietnamese ceramics show influence from metalwork of Indian, Cham, or Khmer origin, especially in large ewers such as this. Swelling shapes and ivory-colored ash glazes characterize Ly ceramics as do decorative motifs such as the lotus petal collar and lid, reflecting the importance of Buddhism. The spout is fashioned as a makara, a mythical water-creature that combines features of elephant, fish, and crocodile, and from whose mouth spews vegetation and jewels. It commonly appears in Khmer architecture. The pseudo-handle is in the form of a parrot, a favorite subject in Vietnamese decorative arts.

Jar, 15th century, Vietnam, Bat Trang village

Jar, 15th century, Vietnam, Bat Trang village. Porcelaneous stoneware with underglaze blue, H. 6 in. (15.2 cm). Gift of Dean F. Frasché, 76.074.003 © 2017 Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University

Although often confused with or considered to be offspring of Chinese Ming dynasty blue-and-white wares, the ceramics of Vietnam differ from their Chinese counterparts in many ways. A creamier, more opaque glaze and a looser pattern in the underglaze decoration are the two most common features that set these wares apart. This particular jar displays some of the most common motifs of Vietnamese underglaze blue wares, such as the peony scroll on the body of the jar and the lotus petals above the foot rim.

Since the fourteenth century, Bat Trang, located in northern Vietnam along the Red River, some thirteen kilometers from Hanoi, has been the center of Vietnamese ceramic production, which still continues today with some five hundred family kilns. It rose to prominence in the fifteenth century when the export of Chinese ceramics from southern ports was temporarily halted. It is possible that many potters from southern China came to Bat Trang at that time. Bat Trang jars were traded and prized throughout Southeast Asia, and have been found in sites as far away as Japan and the Philippines. This jar is an especially fine example and was most likely used for ceremonial or burial purposes, for it displays no sign of extensive use.
