Acquired from Tung Koo Tsar Chinese Curios Co., Shanghai, 25 May 1942.

NoteCompare with a similar cylindrical incense burner with a band of archaic scrolls, early Qing dynasty, illustrated by P.J.Donnelly, Blanc de Chine, New York, 1967, pl.19B. See also another similar tripod incense burner, mid 17th century, illustrated by R.Kerr and J.Ayers, Blanc De Chine: Porcelain from Dehua, Singapore, 2002, fig.77.

Marchese Taliani was a distinguished Italian diplomat who lived through major historical upheavals of the first half of the 20th century, events whose impact affect all to this day. His first diplomatic appointment was to Berlin in 1912; followed by Constantinople in 1913, where during the First World War he negotiated an agreement for the protection of Italian citizens and interests in the (soon to be demise) Ottoman Empire. From 1916 to 1919 he served in St Petersburg, and under the privilege of diplomatic immunity was in a unique position to observe and chronicle first-hand the October Revolution, its day by day development, the subsequent fall of Tsarist Russia and the establishment of the Soviet Republic; from 1919 he served in Rome as Secretary of State for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; with later assignments to London (1921 - 1923) and again to Constantinople (1924 – 1928), this time as the Republic of Turkey; from 1929 - 1930 he was in Rome as Head of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; in 1932 he was appointed Italian Ambassador to the Netherlands; in 1938 he was appointed Ambassador to China, where he remained until 1946; and his last diplomatic appointment was in 1951 as Ambassador to Spain until 1952.

Sent to China in 1938 as Ambassador to the Nationalist Government of Chiang Kai-shek in Nanjing, he became an acute - and far from humourless, despite the hardships of everyday life - front line eye-witness of the Second Sino-Japanese War, during which the Japanese forces captured the capital and attacked Shanghai. When Mussolini recognised Wang Jingwei's Japanese puppet government, Taliani presented his credentials to him. On 8 September 1943, having refused to swear allegiance to the Italian Social Republic (Republic of Salò), he and his wife, the Archduchess Margaretha d'Austria Toscana (1894 - 1986), were arrested and interned by the Japanese in a concentration camp near Shanghai, where they remained for two years until the end of the war. After the end of hostilities, the new government of Alcide De Gasperi reconfirmed him as Ambassador to China until 1946.

Many of the purchase invoices survive, providing an important documentation of Chinese art dealers active in Shanghai and Beijing between 1938 and 1946. The majority of the invoices are dated to between December 1938 and July 1943, with a significant gap until April 1946, explained by Marchese and Marchesa Taliani's internment by the Japanese. The long list of dealers demonstrates the vibrant Chinese art market in Shanghai and Beijing in the late 1930s and early 1940s; this list includes the following:

In Shanghai - K. D. Lu, Yee Chun Chang, C. K. Chou, Strehlneek's Gallery of Chinese Art, The Midoh Co., Tung Koo Tsar Chinese Curios & Arts Co., Philip Chu, Zui Wha Curios & Co., T. Y. A fine and rare famille verte 'Temptations of Lu Dongbin' rouleau vase, Kangxi period (1662-1722)

Lot 133. A fine and rare famille verte 'Temptations of Lu Dongbin' rouleau vase, Kangxi period (1662-1722); 46cm (18in) high. Estimate £ 20,000 -25,000. Sold for £ 18,750 (€ 21,538). © Bonhams.

Exquisitely enamelled around the exterior with a continuous scene of dignitaries and ladies on horseback led by Lu Dongbin, riding towards two ascetics, one wearing a blue tunic with patches and carrying a fly whisk, the other a staff, all amidst a mountainous landscape with trees and wispy clouds.

ProvenancePaul Sobart Collection
An English private collection

NoteThe decoration depicts a scene from the 'Temptations of Lu Dongbin'. The scholar Lu Dongbin (8th century) once met an old man who invited him for a drink. While the wine was warmed up, Lu Dongbin fell asleep and dreamt of the great fortunes that would befall him. Unfortunately, in the end fate turned against him and he lost his family, his position and all his belongings. When he awoke, he realised it was all an illusion. The old man laughed and said 'A whole life lasts only a few minutes!' Lu then realised that the old man was the Daoist Immortal Zhongli Quan. Zhongli Quan accepted Lu Dongbin as his disciple but on the condition he could resist worldly temptations. After having overcome these temptations, he became one of the Eight Immortals. The particular scene on the present lot probably depicts one of the temptations, when a mad Daoist is trying to sell Lu Dongbin a magic potion, claiming that after drinking it one would immediately be reborn as an Immortal. No one dared drink the potion, but Lu did and nothing happened. Funerary stele with male figure, 4000-3000 BCE. Saudi Arabia, El-Maakir, Qaryat al-Kaafa, near Ha’il. Sandstone. Riyadh, National Museum

ABU DHABI.- The Louvre Abu Dhabi opened Roads of Arabia: Archaeological Treasures of Saudi Arabia, the second international exhibition of the museum’s cultural season. The exhibition explores the rich history of the Arabian Peninsula through archaeological and cultural artefacts, including a selection of rare pieces from the United Arab Emirates.

The exhibition explores five chapters in the history of the Arabian Peninsula, spanning early prehistoric settlements; maritime exploration; caravan trading routes that linked the region with Asia, Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean; routes of holy pilgrimage emerging in the 7th century CE; and the social and economic developments between the 14th and 16th centuries that set the stage for the modern day region.

Fourteen acclaimed editions of the show have toured throughout Europe, the USA and Asia before now coming back to the region at Louvre Abu Dhabi, where it is enriched by selected pieces from the UAE. The exhibition was conceived through cooperation between SCTH and the Musée du Louvre in Paris, where it was first presented in 2010.

“Roads of Arabia: Archaeological Treasures of Saudi Arabia forms the centrepiece of our latest cultural season at Louvre Abu Dhabi. The exhibition embodies a significant friendship and convergence between the UAE, Saudi Arabia and France. With the museum located at one of Abu Dhabi’s gateways to the Arabian Peninsula, I can’t think of a more appropriate exhibition to present on the occasion of this institution’s first anniversary.” said H.E. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi.

The expanded exhibition displayed at Louvre Abu Dhabi is co-curated by Jamal S. Omar, Vice President of Antiquities and Museums Department at STCH, Dr. Souraya Noujaim, Scientific, Curatorial and Collection Management Director at Louvre Abu Dhabi, and Noëmi Daucé, Chief Curator for Archaeology at Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, said: “Over the past year, Louvre Abu Dhabi has been telling the world’s universal story through its international exhibitions and innovative programming. Louvre Abu Dhabi’s ambition is to celebrate cross-cultural connections and highlight bridges between civilisations. We launch the exhibition’s programme in our anniversary week with On the Roads of Arabia, a world first showcasing more than 80 talented musicians and their respective cultures from across the ancient trade routes of Arabia.”

Dr. Noujaim added: “Louvre Abu Dhabi’s international exhibitions are always an extension of the artworks and stories we present in our permanent galleries. As part of our season, Worlds of Exchanges, our latest exhibition Roads of Arabia tells the story of this region and offers a closer look at its interconnected history and heritage, across roads weaved throughout the peninsula
