Giovanni di Marco, also known as Giovanni dal Ponte (1385-1437), God the Father sending the dove of the Annunciation, c. 1415. Tempera on cusp-shaped panel mounted in the 18th century; carved and gilt wood frame, 47.5 x 47 cmMoretti Fine Art Ltd, London at Frieze Masters, (Stand D1) 17 to 20 October 2013

LONDON - Moretti Fine Art, with galleries in galleries in Florence, New York and London, will be exhibiting at Frieze Masters (Stand D1), staged on Gloucester Green in Regent’s Park, London, from 17 to 20 October 2013.  Fabrizio Moretti, a member of the Selection Committee for Frieze Masters, said: “After the fair’s success last year, Moretti Fine Art is thrilled to participate in the second edition of Frieze Masters.  We plan to exhibit high quality pieces that underline the timeless character of truly extraordinary Italian Old Masters”.   The 2013 fair will feature some 120 of the world’s leading galleries in ancient to modern art from fifteen countries.  Coinciding with, and within walking distance of, Frieze London, the two fairs will make the city the focus of the international art market in October.

Amongst the fine paintings to be shown by Moretti will be God the Father sending the dove of the Annunciation by Giovanni di Marco (1385-1437), also known as Giovanni dal Ponte.  At one time, this panel was the crowning piece of a larger work.  At a later date, probably towards the end of the 18th century, it was inset within an engraved, gilt, square panel; the ensemble then inserted into a coeval Roman frame.

Such a unique reconfiguration brings to mind the initial stages of a period defined as the Rediscovery of the “Primitives” when the concept of Primitivism was much debated by art critics the world over.  Some viewed it as an attempt to connote the phenomenon as a return to a more sincere spiritualism whilst others saw it as progressive.  The framing is notable in that it places the work among the sparse ranks of other re-arranged pieces and similar survivals can be found in the Tacoli Canacci collection.

Another important feature is the distinctive nature of the subject.   During the later, relatively mature, phase of the Gothic movement in Florence, the theme of the Annunciation – as taken from the Apocryphal Gospels – was usually represented by God sending a dove, sometimes accompanied by a tiny Baby Jesus in flight already bearing the cross of His martyrdom.  Other works by Giovanni di Marco, an important figure in late Florentine Gothic art, such as the panels in Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, have a similar treatment.

Research suggests that the other components of the ‘lost’ or dismantled work, all dated to circa 1415, are in various European museums:  the Annunciation is in the Bartolini-Salimbeni-Vivai Collection, Florence, the Santi are in the Museo Medievale e Moderno, Arezzo, and the predella is in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts, Brussels.

Fabrizio Moretti opened his gallery in Florence in 1999 with the inaugural exhibition From Bernardo Daddi to Giorgio Vasari and soon established a respected reputation in the field of Italian Old Masters.  The gallery works closely with the most notable scholars and public institutions and is known for its dedication to research and for handling works of the highest quality as well as for making this particular area more accessible to private collectors.  In 2005 Moretti opened a gallery in London followed in 2007 with the gallery in New York in collaboration with Adam Williams Fine Art, just steps from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  In December 2011, Moretti Fine Art moved its London headquarters to 2a-6 Ryder Street in St James’s, SW1.   Moretti Fine Art takes part in the annual Master Paintings Week as well as being a regular exhibitor at TEFAF Maastricht, the Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris and the Biennale Internazionale dell’Antiquariato di Firenze.

Tempera on gold ground panel, 21 1/2 Inches. Price: $550,000

Giovanni dal Ponte, also known as Giovanni di Marco, is often grouped with the greatest artists of the early 15th century credited as the harbingers of the Italian Renaissance tradition. Studying under late 14th-century master Spinello Aretino and working alongside 15th-century contemporaries such as Lorenzo Monaco and Masaccio, Giovanni dal Ponte developed a style highlighted by careful use of perspective and naturalism that imbued his works with a tangible weightiness and truth to life. Such can be seen in his devotional composition entitled,Madonna and Child Enthroned, Crowned by Two Angels with Saints Anthony Abbot and James Major

In this composition, the Madonna and Child are locked in tender embrace with one another, flanked by Saint Anthony Abbot on the left (identified by the small pig that sits dutifully at his feet) and Saint James Major on the right (holding the attributes of a book and a pilgrim's staff). Giovanni dal Ponte arranged the composition of these four central figures carefully to convey a sense of recession into space. This sense of depth, a nuance of the day portrayed so masterfully by Giovanni dal Ponte, is broken only with the cherubic Angels that alight over the flanking saints and seemingly emerging from clouds, an homage to the preceding Gothic painting tradition. Given the age of dal Ponte's paintings, few examples of his work of this high quality appear at auction. The majority of his works have become the prized acquisitions of the finest museums around the world, including but not limited to the Prado Museum, Madrid, the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, England.

the Annunciation in the predella with signature 'JACOBUS DI LANDINVS' (on the plinth), tempera and gold on panel, arched top; 46 x 24 in. 116.8 x 61 cm. Sold.

Giovanni dal Ponte, so named after the location of his studio at Santo Stefano a Ponte in Florence, is believed to have been a student of Spinello Aretino. A prolific artist, Giovanni painted in a decorative, linear manner influenced by the Late Gothic style, with some degree of variation as he assimilated the artistic advances of his contemporaries. The figure of Saint John the Baptist in this composition can be compared to the same figure in two versions of Giovanni's Triptych: Coronation of the Virgin (Musée Condé, Chantilly; and Accademia, Florence). The fall of the Virgin's robe, with the right side draped over her left knee, recalls in reverse Spinello's treatment of the same subject (Pinacoteca, Città di Castello).

ProvenanceAnonymous sale, New York, Sotheby's, January 26, 2006, lot 41.

Notes: Giovanni dal Ponte was born in Florence where he was purported to have been a pupil of Spinello Aretino (circa 1345-1410). In 1410, he joined the Arte de Medici e degli Speziali, the official guild of painters, and in 1413 he joined the Compagnia di S. Luca. The moniker "dal Ponte" was taken from Santo Stefano a Ponte, Florence, where Giovanni established his workshop in the late 1420s in association with the painter Smeraldo di Giovanni.

Giovanni's diverse corpus includes fresco cycles, altarpieces and cassone panels. His early work was executed in the style of the Late Gothic, while his later paintings reveal the growing influence of his contemporaries including Masaccio and Lorenzo Ghiberti. Principal early works, reflecting his more decorative and linear style, are the Coronation of the Virgin(circa 1420) in the Musée Condé, Chantilly and the Ascension of Saint John the Evangelist in the National Gallery, London. Later works, in which the impact of Masaccio is particularly evident, include the Virgin and Child with Angels (circa 1427-8) in the Fitzwilliam Museum. The Seven Liberal Arts (1435), a cassone frontal in the Museo del Prado, Madrid, is a fine example of his allegorical paintings.
