An exceptional Ming kesi Imperial dragon roundel, finely woven with a front-facing Imperial dragon in pursuit of a flaming pearl above trident mountains and crusty waves, holding a red disk marked with the character wan between its horns, amid a ground of vaporous clouds, the silk worked in threads of tones of red, blue, green, yellow, beige, white and gold, 36cm diameter, 16th-17th century. Estimate £8000–10000. © Bloomsbury Auctions.

LONDON.- A fine circular silk embroidery of the type worn by a Ming dynasty Emperor which was discovered, by chance, during a free Dreweatts & Bloomsbury Auctions valuation day, will join other important works of art in the 2nd December sale of ‘Chinese Ceramics and Asian Works of Art’ at the Donnington Priory saleroom in Berkshire.

Known as a kesi , ‘cut silk’, the embroidery was worn exclusively by the immediate imperial family on the chest, heart or back of their robes. The present example is decorated with a front-facing five-clawed dragon, a symbol steeped in Chinese tradition and mythology. It signifies goodness, blessing and strength, and is shown in pursuit of a flaming pearl which represents, wealth, good luck and prosperity, while the background comprises clouds and mountains, two of the 12 symbols of Imperial sovereignty.

From a Surrey home, it is expected to sell for £8,000-10,000 in December [Lot 50].

A 19th Century blue ‘clair-du-lune’ glaze monochrome vase is estimated at £200-300. Reserved exclusively for Imperial porcelains when it was first developed, the ‘clair-du-lune’ glaze was one of the most successful monochrome glazes in the history of Chinese ceramics [Lot 97]. Other Chinese works of art include a 19th century celadon jade carving of Liu Hai’s three-legged toad, which symbolises wealth and prosperity, estimated at £300-400 [Lot81] and a carved ivory puzzle ball, estimated at £400-600 [Lot 29].

Topping the Japanese pieces in the sale is an early Edo lacquer Tansu, traditionally used as a mobile storage cabinet, estimated at £700-1,000 [Lot 205].

All lots in the sale are available to view on our website www.dnfa.com. The auction will be held at Dreweatts & Bloomsbury auctions Donnington Priory saleroom in Berkshire on Monday 2nd December with viewing from Friday 29th November (9.00am-4.00pm). Online bidding with no additional fee will be available at www.dnfa.com.

The London jeweller James Cox is best known for his mechanical clocks which were shipped in quite large quantities to India and Canton. It seems likely that he developed his particular specialty, the use of garnets, diamonds and glass equivalents to embellish a clock case, from his knowledge of Indian jewelled artifacts. He clearly had a particular affection for using agate in his display pieces, especially brown and white banded agate.

4

An exceptional ormolu and agate clock for the Chinese market, made by James Cox and still keeping the original key signed and dated by him, was sold in our London rooms, 12 December 2012. See also a comparable agate-set cage-mounted rectangular snuff box in the manner of Cox, now secured within the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated by Hou, Yi-Li, Lifting the Spirit and Body: The Art and Culture of Snuff Bottles, Taipei, 2012, pp.62-63, no.I-004 (fig.1). See also another similar example now in Temple Newsan House, Leeds, illustrated by A. Kenneth Snowman, Eighteenth Century Gold Boxes of Europe, pl.453. For a pair of Canton gilt-copper and agate snuff boxes which were Tribute boxes to Beijing, see Tributes from Guangdong to the Qing Court, op.cit., nos.29, 30, col.pl.76.

Imported agate boxes show up regularly in lists of gifts from Canton officials to the Qing Court: for example, in the 11th year of Yongzheng (1733) Mao Keming, Superintendent of Guangdong Maritime Customs and Zheng Wusai, Deputy Superintendent jointly presented rose quartz court necklaces, Yidalun snuff boxes, foreign agate snuff boxes and variegated agate snuff boxes: see Tributes from Guangdong to the Qing Court, op.cit., p.58.

Naturalistically moulded in the form of a blossoming flower with mounted rims, the life-like petals intertwined and folded inwards atop each other, beautifully enamelled in vivid tones of red and rose pink, the detailed veins and stamens further highlighted in gilt, the interior revealing a raised node with a floral medallion decorated in puce enamel. 6.9cm wide; 7.2cm deep; 5.2cm high. Estimate HK$ 95,000 - 115,000 (€9,100 - 11,000)

3

This form is very unusual in Chinese porcelain. It closely simulates porcelain flower head boxes created in Europe at a number of leading factories including Chelsea, Meissen and the French softpaste kilns. The idea is very innovative in China, although the palette is familiar in 18th century Chinese enamelled porcelain. No other flower head snuff box made in Chinese porcelain appears to have been published.

4

In Europe, smaller boxes like this were not always used for snuff; another type of box is called a 'drageoir', and was used for comfits and sweet pastilles (they later acquired the name 'bonbonnière').

Of cylindrical form rising to a domed cover, the circular top central panel featuring an unusually natural portrait painted on hardstone of a European female under a translucent glass domed plaque, her slender figure and pale complexion beneath her large hat with red ribbons at the rear, framed within a band of raised floral scrolls in relief at the shoulders, the sides inset with eight evenly-spaced agate glass plaques, cleverly formed with subtle tones of natural grain and textures. 6.7cm diam; 3.5cm high. Estimate HK$ 180,000 - 220,000 -€17,000 - 21,000)

3

Normally the portraits set into these boxes depict actual subjects commissioned from leading miniaturists in Europe. However, the European originals often have somewhat more personality than the individual depicted here by either a Chinese (or possibly Western) artist. For a typical example of a circular box set with a female portrait, see A.Kenneth Snowman, Eighteenth Century Gold Boxes of Europe, col.pl.400, where he illustrates a fine French gold box dated c.1777-8, set with a portrait painted by the leading British miniaturist John Smart.

The rectangular box with a silver frame to hold the fragile panels, the top brilliantly carved in crisp relief with an elegant scene of a male gazing at a lady at rest under a tree, the base depicting a pair of water nymphs emerging from waves embracing each other, the sides decorated with various scenes of cupids engaging in similar activities, all exquisitely and finely worked panels in attractive crisp relief. 6.2cm wide; 4.3cm deep; 3.5cm high. Estimate HK$ 240,000 - 260,000 (€23,000 - 25,000)

3

The panels are extremely well worked by the Canton craftsman, but this sort of shell work had become a speciality of the region, possibly because the raw material was imported as part of Canton's entrepot trade. At a later date shell would be used to create more mundane Export. In the 18th century, panels like this would have been carved using European prints as an unusual and mildly erotic design source. The prints may well have been Dutch, although the Rococo subject matter may well have originally been French, circa 1720-50: see for an example the elaborate shell-set cage-mounted box made in Paris in 1748, illustrated by A.Kenneth Snowman, Eighteenth Century Gold Boxes of Europe, op.cit., col.pl.170.

Gold, emerald, diamond and ruby brooch. Photo courtesy Sotheby's.

Of Indian inspiration, centering a cushion-cut emerald weighing approximately 41.20 carats, accented by numerous round, baguette, pear-shaped, old European and single-cut diamonds weighing approximately 11.55 carats, decorated with two stylized birds, further set with round and hexagon-shaped emeralds and five cabochon rubies, unsigned; circa 1945. With fitted Cartier box. Estimation 200,000 — 300,000 USD

Accompanied by AGL report no. CS 56438 stating that the emerald is of Colombian origin, clarity enhancement: insignificant, type: traditional.

Although unsigned, this brooch is reminiscent of Cartier jewels inspired by the Indian aesthetic dating from between 1913 and the late 1940s. Other jewels by Cartier from the same Distinguished Family Collection utilize similar techniques, combining an array of vibrant colors, stones of unusual shapes and intricate metalwork to create pieces that are highly stylized and contemporary in nature, despite being inspired by visual traditions hundreds of years old.  After Jacques Cartier’s first voyage to India in 1911, Indian-inspired jewels emerged from the design house as the Maharajas and the Indian elite started to ask for their traditional jewels to be re-set and re-worked to fit the new Parisian styles they so admired.

This brooch is a lovely complement to lots 455 and 458 from the same collection, both in style and technique. Like the two additional lots signed by Cartier, the present brooch capitalizes on the regal power of the emerald. Similar to lot 458, the emerald and diamond necklace by Cartier London, this brooch encases the 41.20 carat Colombian emerald in a delicate but ornate diamond frame. Many of the Cartier jewels of Indian inspiration pull their designs from the flora and fauna of India. One can see intricate floral designs in pieces such as lot 455, the ruby and emerald earclips. In this particular brooch, two exotic birds with their necks elegantly craned hover over and around the emerald-set center.

A magnificent pair of Imperial porcelain vases Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, period of Nicholas I dated 1833, £2,000,000-2,500,000. Photo courtesy Sotheby's

The size and decoration of these vases make a bold statement, just as they did 180 years ago. We’ve called them ‘magnificent’ but that doesn’t really do them justice. They are impressive on a truly Imperial scale’ - Darin Bloomquist, Director, Head of Russian Works of Art at Sotheby’s.

Produced in 1833 at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory of Nicholas I, these magnificent large-scale porcelain vases rank among the very best, most desirable examples of their type.

The three decades of Emperor Nicholas I’s reign are regarded as the peak of porcelain production in Russia. He was an enthusiastic patron of the Imperial Manufactory and was, apart from Catherine the Great, the Russian monarch most interested in the arts. Foremost among the porcelain wares made during this period are the vases on which the central panels serve as ‘canvases’ for reproducing two-dimensional works of art. Paintings were either brought to the manufactory for copying, or the painter-decorators worked in a room at the Hermitage specially reserved for the purpose. Such vases were often produced for the Emperor himself, presented to him at New Year or Easter, or for a member of the Imperial family, sometimes as part of a dowry, or as diplomatic gifts to foreigners.

The first of the present vases is painted with an interior genre scene after the The Concert by Anthonie Palamedes (1601-1673), copied by the master porcelain painter Semyon Golov (c1783-1849). The original painting remains in the collection of the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg. The second vase is painted with an outdoor musical gathering. The whereabouts of the original painting and the identity of its artist remain unknown though if indeed the painting has been lost to history, it has been skilfully reproduced here by the master porcelain painter Vasili Meshcheriakov (b. 1781).

Provenance: Christie's Geneva, 30 November 1982, lot 294

The present lot is among a small number of buttercups produced.  For a similar example, see Wartski, Carl Fabergé: A Private Collection, 15-25 May 2012, cat. no. 26, p. 34-35.  Another, struck with Wigström's mark, was formerly in the Robert Strauss Collection (illustrated, G. von Habsburg and A. von Solodkoff, Fabergé: Court Jeweller to the Tsars, 1979, plate 109, p. 89.)  The Royal Collection includes a flower study of both buttercups and cornflowers (RCIN 100011; illustrated, C. de Guitaut,Royal Fabergé, 2011, p. 122-123), which was purchased by Queen Elizabeth in 1947.  A small, budding buttercup with nephrite leaves, struck with Wigström's mark and dated 1908-1917, is in the National Museum, Stockholm (illustrated, M. Swezey, Fabergé Flowers, 2004, p. 38).

The inventory of Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna's flowers compiled in 1917 includes a 'wildflower - gold stem, yellow enamelled flower with diamonds' and a 'wildflower - gold stem, yellow enamelled flower with diamonds in a vase of rock crystal' (see V. Skurlov, 'In Search of Fabergé Flowers in Russia', M. Swezey, Fabergé Flowers, 2004, p. 113).

The rock crystal pots or vases were carved in a variety of forms.  For other faceted pots, see Christie's Geneva, 11 November 1975, lot 262, and Christie's New York, 20 April 2000, lot 73, containing a dandelion; Sotheby's New York, 28 June 1979, lot 360, a sprig of raspberry; The India Early Minshall Collection at The Cleveland Museum of Art, inv. no. 66.443, a lily-of-the-valley.

IMPORTANT RUSSIAN ART HIGHLIGHTS

Henri Semiradsky Un naufragé mendiant (1878) oil on canvas, 208 by 293.5cm £1,000,000-£1,300,000

Born into a Polish family near Kharkov, a graduate of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg and a resident of Rome, Semiradsky was a truly pan-European artist who in his works brought to life a Golden Age of European civilisation. He took Paris by storm when he submitted three paintings to the Exposition Universelle in 1878, and was singled out not just for his monumental masterpiece The Torches of Nero (now held in the National Museum Krakow), but also for the two other paintings hanging alongside this spectacular canvas: La coupe ou la femme and Un naufragé mendiant.

Now estimated at £1-1.3 million, Un naufragé mendiant is one of the artist’s most significant works remaining in private hands. Depicting a beautiful young woman being lowered on to a luxurious barge as she looks at an elderly beggar, it is an exceptional example of an idealised scene set in Classical antiquity and a tour de force of light, colour and different textures. The Russian Imperial family were among Semiradsky’s patrons, and sadly many of his other monumental works, such as his murals for the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow, are now lost.

Originally in the collection of the Hollywood actor and collector, George Montgomery (1916-2000), this is unquestionably the most impressive nude by Fechin ever to come to auction and a striking example of the artist’s talent as a colourist - demonstrating an exquisite command of palette and an adept understanding of form. The present nude is one of several works from Montgomery’s collection bequeathed to the Palm Springs Art Museum after the actor’s death. It will be sold by the museum in November to benefit the George Montgomery Acquisition Fund.

Vereshchagin spent the winter of 1873-74 in Tiflis after travelling through the Caucasus following the course of the river Rioni. The exoticism of the region, and Tiflis in particular, made it an extremely attractive destination for a number of Russian writers and painters - it was a highly cosmopolitan city during the 19th century, populated by Armenians, Turks and Azeris and a hub of trade, as Vereshchagin’s bustling street scene implies. Fascinated by the life of the local population, the architecture and colour, Vereshschagin gave the contemporary spectator a real sense of local life in the far-flung cities of the Russian empire which they would likely never see first-hand.

THREE IMPORTANT WORKS FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION, FINLAND

Nikolai Roerich Karelia, Evening Snow 1918, £250,000-350,000

This landscape was most likely painted in Sortavala, where the Roerich family lived after fleeing the Bolshevik Revolution. They had left behind all their possessions, money was running out and the future was uncertain while the artist was slowly recovering from a near fatal bout of pneumonia. This is one of very few winter scenes from the period and shows not a hint of the turmoil in the artist’s personal life or the madness engulfing the continent.

Nikolai Sapunov Peonies, 1907 Estimate £40,000-60,000

Valentin Serov Portrait of a Lady said to be Maria Vasilievna Yakunchikova, 1892 Estimate £200,000-300,000

This portrait is thought to depict Maria Yakunchikova (1870-1902), a close friend of the Abramtsevo group and an artist in her own right. She was the subject of a number of works by her contemporaries including At Tea by Konstantin Korovin.

Jadeite was a very expensive and rare commodity in the 18th century, before Emperor Qianlong's military campaign in the 1770s opened direct access to the jadeite sources in Burma. Examples of 18th century jadeite in the Court collections are often of small size, such as the thinly-carved panels incorporated into this cage-mounted box where the main metal ribs of the box are intended to protect the fragile jadeite panels from stress and impact damage. For a small circular jadeite box and cover, using the same highly-mottled stone, see Treasures of Imperial Court: The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, no.195. For a smaller and less impressive example set with a green agate top, see the silver example illustrated by John Devereux Kernan, The Chait Collection of Chinese Export Silver, New York, 1975, no.253.
