The vase is delicately enamelled in gilt on the neck with blooming lotus flowers each enclosing a Wan symbol borne on scrolling tendrils, the globular body decorated with further scrolling lotus interspersed with bats each suspending a Ji character.

Note: Imperial porcelain produced during the Xianfeng period are rare, partially due to the relatively short reign of the Emperor, but also due to the Taiping Rebellion which broke out in the fifth year of the Xianfeng reign, during which the Jingdezhen Imperial kilns were largely destroyed by the rebellion forces, and were not rebuilt until later in the Tongzhi reign. Most of the Imperial Xianfeng porcelain bear a reign mark in standard script, just like the present vase, while stylistically are much in line with Jiaqing and Daoguang Imperial wares. Compare for example to a Jiaqing-marked coral-ground gilt-decorated vase from the Huaihaitang Collection, which bears an almost identical decoration as that on the present vase, illustrated in Ethereal Elegance: Porcelain Vases of the Imperial Qing, Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2007, pl. 83. Antonio Verrio, The Sea Triumph of Charles II, c.1674, The Royal Collection Trust/© Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 2019

LONDONThis is the first time that Tate has staged a show devoted to the later 17th century and the first to explore baroque art in Britain. It will be a chance to encounter a rich, sophisticated but overlooked era of art history. Many of the works will be on display for the first time - some borrowed from the stately homes they have hung in since they were made.

From the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 to the death of Queen Anne in 1714, the late Stuart period was a time of momentous change for Britain. From the royal court as the brilliant epicentre of the nation’s cultural life to the rise of party politics, the exhibition will look at the magnificence of art and architecture as an expression of status and influence.

This exhibition will include the work of the leading painters of the day – including Peter Lely, Godfrey Kneller and James Thornhill. It will celebrate grand-scale portraiture, the wonder and artifice of trompe l’oeil, the emotional persuasion of religious spaces and the awe-inspiring impact of baroque mural painting. Throughout, the show will consider the use of art to convey power, however distant the illusion sometimes was from reality.

The cup is decorated and gilt depicting Dong Xian wearing official's robes and holding a hu tablet. He is accompanied by two inscriptions relating to his life and story. One of the inscriptions enclosed within a colourful border of precious objects.

Provenance: Sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 14 November 1989, lot 306 (one of two); sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 27 November 2007, lot 1767.

Note: Dong Xian was a Han dynasty official who ascended quickly to a powerful position, many attribute his success to his personal relationship with Emperor Ai (Aidi, BC 21-1), who was considered bisexual. The inscriptions refer to an anecdote where Aidi woke up one day with the young man Dong Xian cradled on his arm sound asleep. So as not to disturb Dong, Aidi cut off his sleeve and slipped out his arm to attend to his court duties. The term 'passion of the torn sleeve' came to be synonymous with male homosexual love. Upon Aidi's premature death, Dong was dismissed, which resulted in his suicide and that of his wife. The Emperor Jiaqing was known to be a frugal and conscientious monarch, and hence this cautionary tale would have appealed to him.
