Note: For an example of a kemha fabric with similar colouring and design, dated to the mid-sixteenth century, from the Victoria and Albert Museum, see N. Gürsu, The Art of Turkish Weaving, Designs through the Ages, Istanbul, 1988, p.80, pl.75. The intersection of the cintamani, stem and leaves are comparable to the section on the present panel, repeated in two sections up the right side, both in gold, with blue highlights, dark edging, and on a cerise ground. Another comparable is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, inv. no.52.50.50 (Atasoy, Denny, Mackie, Tezcan 2001, pp.288-9).

metal threads on a silk cream ground, with red voided velvet outlines and background, with large rosettes emanating peacock feathers surrounded by floral and carnation vines, mounted.

Note: "According to Islamic legend the peacock had been a denizen of paradise but was expelled along with Adam and Eve for failing to follow God's commandments" (Atasoy 2001, p.262).

Along with the 'quatre-fleurs style' named for the four most commonly used flowers: the tulip, hyacinth, rose and the carnation, all closely associated with the Ottoman Court, the peacock feather was integrated in a number of creative ways on Ottoman velvets, the present lot and lot 167 being good examples. Contemporaneous records show that the silk weaving ateliers of Bursa and Istanbul were carefully monitored by the Ottoman Court, indeed the number of looms and the usage of precious metals was strictly controlled and workshops producing anything but the highest quality of textiles were forcibly closed down. It followed that the designs were also closely monitored and that weavers and designers were forced to follow strict guidelines as to form and content and could, therefore, only show their creativity and inventiveness within a relatively narrow remit.

of rectangular form, composed of cream, green and red velvet threads, featuring a lobed medalion with floral steams, and leafy stems of each side, the arches and end-bands also containing floral motifs, mounted.

Note: Surviving evidence suggests that cushion covers (yastik yüzü) were woven in pairs and more rarely in sets of four. They used a variety of designs which were adapted for repeat/mirror image yardage. It is not unusual to find the covers later re-used in other items, due to their size, and their designs influenced those of small embroideries and pile weavings produced in Anatolia and the Caucasus. Indeed, two very similar examples sewn together as a double panel sold in Christie's London, 27 April 2017, lot 140. Further close comparables with the same design are in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, inv. no.842-1852, The State Historical Museum, Moscow, inv. no.GIM-19201, from the P.I. Schukin Collection, and the Topkapi Palace Museum, Istanbul, inv. no.13/1441.

The delicately potted bowl with deep sides decorated around the exterior with three crane medallions in soft underglaze-blue and surrounded by yellow and iron-red blossoms, each supported on leafy sprigs bearing an iron-red flower and bud, the interior with a central medallion enclosing a single floral spray, all within blue borders, box.

Provenance: The T.Y. Chao Private and Family Trust Collections of Important Chinese Ceramics, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 18 November 1986, lot 139.

Note: Kangxi bowls of this design are very rare. One published bowl of this pattern but with Yongzheng reign mark was included in the Exhibition of Chinese Art, Messrs. C. T. Loo, New York, 1941, Catalogue no. 729. Another Yongzheng example was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 28 November 2006, lot 1550.

OXFORD.- At around 11pm yesterday (14/3) offenders broke into Christ Church Picture Gallery in St Aldates.

Three high value paintings were stolen in the burglary:

Annibale Carracci, 'A Boy Drinking,' c. 1580.

Antony Van Dyck, 'A Soldier on Horseback,' c. 1616.

Salvator Rosa, 'A Rocky Coast, with Soldiers Studying a Plan,' late 1640s.

No-one was injured during the burglary.

Investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Jon Capps, said: “The paintings which have been stolen are very high value pieces dating back to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

“The artwork has not yet been recovered but a thorough investigation is underway to find it and bring those responsible to justice.

“There will be an increased police presence in the area while officer and staff carry out enquiries.

“If you saw or heard anything suspicious in the area last night, please get in touch.

“Also if you have any CCTV or other footage around the area that you think could help with the investigation, please share them with us.

Finely potted in imitation of its Ming prototype with gentle rounded sides rising from a recessed base, painted in underglaze-blue and enamelled on the exterior with lotus sprays, each supporting a bowl containing an auspicious emblem, all between blue line borders, the countersunk base with an apocryphal six-character Chenghua mark within a double square.

Provenance: Sir Harry and Lady Garner.

Note: The Ming prototypes of the present doucai vessel, bearing Chenghua reign marks, are in the National Palace Museum Collection, Taipei, illustrated in Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of Ch'eng-hua Porcelain Ware, Taipei, 2003, p. 160-61, no. 157-60, where these are catalogued as 'washers'.

Each finely potted with deep rounded sides rising from a slightly tapered foot to a flaring rim, the exterior finely and densely decorated with a continuous pattern of flowering peony, chrysanthemum, lotus and hibiscus, intertwined with scrolling foliage, all in brightly coloured enamels reserved on a rich yellow-ground, the interior painted with five bats in iron-red, box.

Provenance: The Edward T. Chow Collection, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 25 November 1980, lot 157.

Note: Yellow-ground famille rose floral bowls of this pattern on the exterior and with five iron-red bats to the interior, appear to have developed from the Qianlong reign. A Qianlong-marked example in the British Museum collection is illustrated by H. Moss, By Imperial Command, Hong Kong, 1976, pl. 6. A Jiaqing-marked bowl from the Qing Court Collection, is illustrated in Porcelains with Cloisonne Enamel Decoration and Famille Rose Decoration, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, p. 205, no. 181. It has been recorded that a large quantity of these yellow-ground bowls were made as early as the second year of the Qianlong reign, ibid, p. 205.

Daoguang-marked bowls of this pattern come in two sizes. An example of the smaller size (14.8 cm. diam.) is a pair from the Fonthill Collection sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 1 December 2010, lot 2892. The larger examples at 18.5 cm. include the bowl from the Yangzhitang Collection, sold at Christie's Singapore, 30 March 1997, lot 276; another in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, The World's Great Collections, 1977, vol. 12, no. 163; and yet another bowl illustrated by J. Ayers, Chinese Ceramics in the Baur Collection, vol. 2, 1999, p. 234, no. 338 (A630).

of piriform on a splayed foot, the long cylindrical neck with two raised band terminating in a long flaring scalloped rim, decorated in a brownish-gold lustre with frieze of large seated figures interspersed by an oil lamp, a ewer and a plate of food, a band of inscription below, the neck and shoulder with vegetal interlace and floral motifs.

Note: Inscriptions: a repeat of al-'izz wa al-iqbal, 'Glory and prosperity'.

This example is decorated in the 'Monumental' style which developed towards the end of the 12th century. Typified by brownish-gold lustre on a white ground with bold, large-scale decoration on an ornate ground depicting subjects such as horsemen, animals, or seated figures as in the present lot.

with eight points, decorated in cobalt blue and a brownish gold lustre on a cream ground with a central lotus surrounded by cartouches containing foliate motifs, the border with a band of inscription. 

Note: Inscriptions: the opening couplets from Firdawsi's Shahnameh including two couplets which are not in the accepted edition.

The appearance of the opening lines of the Shahnameh on a Kashan lustre tile is extremely unusual and possibly unique.

Provenance: Formerly in a Dutch private collection, Amsterdam, acquired in the 1960s.

Note: Inscriptions: to the border the basmalah; to the central part '... al-Din Hamd (?) ... Kafi al-D... may (God) forgive him ... his death on...day (a day of the week) ... al-akhir (either Rabi' II or Jumadi II).

The tile most probably formed part of a panel marking the death of the person buried in a particular shrine. A comparable tile is in the Art Institute of Chicago, reference no. 1925.198.

of tall cylindrical form with eight edges, painted in a golden lustre on an opaque white and light blue glaze with alternating pseudo-Kufic inscriptions on a scrolling ground and palmette bands, reserved in lustre, quatrain along shoulder, the interior of rim with traces of blue glaze and inscription.

Provenance: Ex-private collection, Switzerland, pre-1991.

The cup stand is raised on a high, flared foot to an extended flange formed of eight petal-shaped lobes that encircles a central cup-form receptacle to hold a cup. It is covered in a light green celadon glaze with exception of the foot rim, Japanese wood box.
