PHILADELPHIA, PA.- More than 195 contemporary fine craft artists from across the U.S. will exhibit and sell their work at the 38th annual Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, held Nov. 6 to 9 with an opening night gala on Nov. 5. Presented annually by the Museum Women’s Committee and Craft Show Committee, the event showcases the country’s finest craft artists and attracts some 18,000 visitors to the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia over four days.

The highly competitive jury process draws artists from Maine to California, carefully selected from more than 1,000 applicants. Craft Show artists present a striking variety of museum-quality work in glass, ceramics, wood, basketry, both wearable and decorative fibers, metal, paper, leather and mixed media, as well as one-of-a-kind handmade furniture and both precious and semi-precious jewelry.

Craft buyers can meet, learn about and purchase unique items from artists who are represented in prominent museum collections nationwide, including the Museum of Art and Design, N.Y.; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Mass.; Mint Museum of Art, N.C.; Craft and Folk Art Museum, Calif.; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, D.C. Collectible, handmade works, from artist-designed jewelry to sculptural furniture, are available in a wide price range from $100 or below to $8,000.

2014 artists include Christine Love Adcock (Santa Barbara, Calif.), Bennett Bean (Blairstown, N.J.), Desiree Delong (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Bruce Erdman (Greendale, Wis), Amy Gillespie (Arlington, Mass.), Starr Hagenbring (New Orleans, La.), Elizabeth Kinder (Philadelphia, Pa.), Minh Martin (Charlottesville, Va.) and Youngjoo Yoo (Champaign, Ill.)

A full list of 2014 artists and images of their work are now available at pmacraftshow.org/artists.

Promoting its place in the forefront of craft education, the Craft Show will devote its 2014 guest artists program to emerging artists. This year the show will again offer outstanding work from top craft students from The University of the Arts, Moore College of Art & Design, Kutztown University, and Savannah College of Art and Design.

The event will also include artist meet and greets, on-site artist demonstrations and a craft beer social night. The opening night gala on Nov. 5 from 4 to 9 p.m. offers collectors an opportunity to get a first look at the Show and includes a cocktail buffet. More details will be available soon at pmacraftshow.org.

Organized and coordinated by 2014 Show Chair Carol Blank Barsh and Show Manager Nancy O’Meara and staffed by volunteers, Craft Show proceeds benefit the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Over the last 37 years, the Show has contributed more than $11 million in museum funding, used to purchase works of art and craft for the permanent collections, support education programs, and contribute to conservation and publication projects. “Not only do all the proceeds go directly to varied museum-wide activities, but a percentage also goes in a fund that is applied to acquiring contemporary craft,” says Philadelphia Museum of Art associate curator Elisabeth Agro. “That’s what sets the Craft Show apart.”

'I have found that living and working in the space between clay’s opposites to be a challenge that continues to motivate me. Clay is cool and moist yet requires the fiery heat of the kiln. It's soft and malleable yet rigid and brittle. Clay is inert and inorganic, a mixture of silicas and aluminas, yet it is also in some ways alive and unpredictable. Whether throwing, pinching, slicing, piercing or embossing, the sensual feel of the porcelain enhances the experience. Achieving grace of line and form is paramount to me creatively.' Lulu Fichter

So often, people tell me,”I just want to touch your work.” I love hearing that. I form, carve, polish, and glaze to invite physical interaction. I am intrigued by pattern and look for those that I can understand phenomenologically rather than specifically. I know I have it right, when one person says, “That reminds me of coral,” another says, “lacy stinkhorn”, and another says, “blood vessels.” I make art as a way to understand the world I live inSimon Van der Ven

Piaget has created the colourful Extremely Piaget collection specifically for the Biennale. The maison, which celebrates its 140th anniversary this year, has pulled out all the stops with a collection of watches and jewels that explodes with colour thanks to an array of different stones, including emeralds, sapphires, turquoise, lapis lazuli and yellow diamonds. Piaget's meticulous craftsmanship is evident in every piece, with plenty of surprising touches, including a tiny watch dial in either turquoise or lapis lazuli dangling nonchalantly from a sautoir necklace.

MUMBAI.- Esther Brinkmann (b) 1953, the Swiss born celebrated jewellery designer will showcase her new works in the exhibition Renewable Pleasures: The India Chapter, at Chemould Prescott Road, Mumbai, India, this July 28, 2014. The exhibition presenting unique handmade neckpieces, rings and brooches complimented in precious material, will run until August 23, 2014.

Professionally trained in Geneva, Esther’s latest solo exhibitions include, East West - DONG XI, Feigallery, Guangzhou, 2010 Clouds and other dreams of Jewels, GOELIA 225 Space, Guangzhou, 2009, Not for your body only, Feigallery, Guangzhou, 2008. Her works have been presented in Entfesselt – Schmuck ohne Grenzen, Museum Bellerive, Zurich, CH, 2012, Décor, Design et Industrie, les arts appliqués à Genève, Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, Genève, CH, 2010/11, from hand to hand, mudac, Museum of contemporary design and art, Lausanne, CH, 2008.

From 2005 to 2010 she lived in China and from 2010 to 2014 she has lived in India. These long “residencies” have occurred being the wife of a Swiss Diplomat. Both countries, China and India with strong cultural identities have in their own way fed new ideas into Brinkmann’s timeless yet contemporary forms.

In India, Brinkmann worked with a master craftsman who is an expert in traditional inlay work found in traditional Indian Jewellery. Kamal meenakar and Brinkmann exchanged ideas of colour, which she incorporated into her existing forms.

Renewable Pleasures: The India Chapter marks the end of her four years expedition in India at Chemould Prescott Road. Her upcoming participation will be at Multiple Exposures, Museum of Art and design, New York later this year.
