LONDON.- Leah Gordon's new photographs investigate the practice of the grading from black to white of skin colour, referred to as Caste, which revealed the extent of racial mixing in 18th century colonial Haiti.
A measuring system which moves through black to white in nine degrees, it was developed by a French colonialist living in Haiti during the slave plantation period. Moreau de St Mery created a surreal taxonomy of race which classified the skin colour of the colony’s population, where white, or Blanche was inevitably socially superior to black, or Noir. Using names borrowed from mythology, natural history and bestial miscegenation, St Mery classified nine degrees of shading, from pure black to 1/8 white, and 7/8 black and so on through Sacatra, Griffe, Marabou, Mulâtre, Mamelouque, Quarteronné and Sang-Mêlé to White.
As Colin Dayan, a Haitian historian, comments, ‘Stranger than any supernatural fiction, the radical irrationality of Moreau St Mery’s methods demonstrates to what lengths the imagination can go if driven by racial prejudice.’
Leah Gordon’s discovery of Moreau’s classification system inspired her to make Caste Portraits of the nine skin varieties, with herself at one end of the scale, the ‘Blanche’, and her partner, Andre Eugene, a Haitian sculptor, at the other end of the racial spectrum.
Leah Gordon is a photographer, film-maker and curator who has produced a body of work on the representational boundaries between art, religion, anthropology, post-colonialism and folk history. Her photography book Kanaval: Vodou, Politics and Revolution on the Streets of Haiti was published in June 2010 and was the culmination of a sixteen year long project.
Gordon was the adjunct curator for the Haitian Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011, is part of the curatorial team for the upcomingIn Extremis exhibition of Haitian Vodou arts (opening in Sept 2012) at the Fowler Museum, UCLA, created and co-curated the Ghetto Biennale and is co-curating, with Alex Farquharson, the major exhibition Kafou, on Haitian art at the Nottingham Contemporary in October 2012.

LONDON.- In addition to their gallery in the heart of Sablon, Brussels, Asian art dealers Duchange & Riché have opened a new gallery at Grays in Mayfair for their London based customers.
Anne Duchange and Philippe Riché continue a family tradition that began in Paris in 1965 with Anne’s father. Anne now shares her enthusiasm and expertise with her husband, Philippe, who is a member of the Oriental Ceramic Society.
Specialising in fine Chinese porcelain and works of art from the 14th-19th Century, Duchange & Riché display an important collection of porcelain from China, Japan and the East India Company. The Ming and Tsing dynasties are particularly well represented as well as objets d'art of Canton enamel, cloisonné enamels, lacquer, jade, ivory and bamboo works. La base rectangulaire repose sur quatre pieds à enroulements d'acanthes. Le décor de la partie basse est ornée de la représentation de l'Agneau pascal et des Tables de la Loi. Le fût est richement orné d'un vase balustre d'où émerge une gerbe de blé et des angelots. Il se termine en partie haute par un Soleil reçevant la monstrance entourée d'une nuée d'angelots. It is ironic that Ettore Bugatti’s most successful Le Mans car was intended as a grand routier, not an out-and-out sports car. Designed by his son Jean, the Type 57 used the eight-cylinder twin-cam engine of the Type 49, but with timing gears rather than chains. The model was introduced in 1934 and became the sole offering in 1936 when its siblings were discontinued. A lowered chassis model, Type 57S, was available and both could be had with a Roots-type supercharger, in which case a “C” suffix was used. In all, 684 Type 57s were built, just 96 of them 57Cs.
The Type 57 was originally offered in four body styles, three of which were named after famous mountain peaks in the Alps: Galibier, Stelvio and Ventoux. The attractive Stelvio was commonly outsourced to various coachbuilders, this one to the French firm Éts. Georges Gangloff SA, of Colmar.
Bugatti’s Marseilles agent, Gaston Descollas, ordered chassis 57716 on 21 April 1938, for use as a demonstrator. On 26 July it was sent to Gangloff, who delivered the completed car on 12 September. It was registered in October and sold to a Mr Jouillé, of Marseilles. It remained with a succession of owners in that area until it was sold to E.S. Ramirez in 1946, who registered it in Madrid, where he worked at the US Embassy.
The car is shown in Hugh Conway’s 1962 Bugatti Register as owned by Ramirez, who soon thereafter sold it to Baron J.O. Raben-Levetzau, who was establishing the museum at Aalholm Castle. At that time it had been modified with a longer bonnet, the fate of a number of Bugattis during that era. The Baron returned the car to its correct configuration.
Restored many years ago, the car shows its age. The body contours are generally good, as is the brightwork. The paint, however, shows cracking and should be redone. The instrument panel, apart from a couple of replacement gauges, is nice. The undercarriage is solid, and the engine compartment, whilst in need of detailing, is correct, including the original supercharger.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most iconic Bugatti models in very original condition.

The year 1933 brought Mercedes’ new generation of fast sporting models, the work of engineer Hans Nibel. Born in Bohemia in 1880, Nibel studied at Munich Technical College and joined Benz & Cie in 1904, becoming the chief engineer four years later. It was he who created the Blitzen Benz speed record car of 1910. Following Ferdinand Porsche’s departure in 1929, he was named the technical director. Throughout the period, he concentrated on advanced chassis engineering, which became the mainstay of Mercedes-Benz in the 1930s/
For the new cars, Nibel came up with a straight-eight, pushrod OHV design of 3,823 cc. The new Typ 380 had all-independent suspension, which Nibel had pioneered on the plebeian Typ 170 sedan. A double-wishbone design with coil springs was used in front, with coil-sprung swing axles at the rear. The 380, however, proved to be somewhat underpowered, making 90 bhp when normally aspirated or 140 bhp with the double-vane Roots-type supercharger, which is a bit underwhelming for a two-ton car. Nibel then came up with a larger five-litre engine that gave 100/160 bhp, and introduced it in 1934 as the Typ 500K, “K” in this case meaning kompressor or supercharger. The wheelbase was extended to 3,290 mm (129.5 inches), and a range of cabriolets, roadsters and sedans was offered. Production of 500Ks totalled 354 over three years, followed by a further 419 540Ks with a larger 5,401 cc engine.
This Spezial Roadster replica carries the chassis number of a 1936 500K Cabriolet B and its door openings, wing profiles and bonnet ventilation. The cockpit is upholstered in beige leather, but there is no hood, just an empty dummy cover. The car is fitted with Carl Zeiss front lighting, and it apparently has an original radiator.
