Lot 473. Gem-set and diamond bracelet-wristwatch, Ostertag, circa 1930. Estimate 95,000 — 140,000 CHF. Lot sold 206,500 CHF. Photo: Sotheby's 2012

The straps set with meandering vines of carved emeralds, sapphires and rubies, accented with marquise-shaped, circular-, and single-cut diamonds, the square-shaped dial within a cushion-shaped case pavé-set with circular-cut stones and flanked with bands of buff top calibré-cut emeralds, length approximately 165mm, case signed Ostertag made in France, and numbered, French assay mark.

Property of a noble family.

Note: Exclusive Swiss born Parisian jeweller Arnold Ostertag opened his salon in the Place Vendôme in the first half of the twentieth century.  Much like the finest jewelers of that era, he too was fascinated by the lavish aesthetic of the Far East, and was particularly taken with Chinese and Indian motifs.  The masterpieces in his boutique reflected this interest, and works such as this bangle demonstrate the inspiration he drew from exotic far away lands.

Federico Barocci (Italian, Urbino ca. 1535–1612 Urbino), The Assumption of the Virgin, 1604–1605. Oil on canvas, 94 1/8 × 67 5/16 in. (239 × 171 cm). Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, Urbino © Scala / Art Resource, NY

Barocci, perhaps the greatest Italian painter of his generation, was famed for the careful study that went into the design of his altarpieces. This Assumption, in which the Virgin rises to heaven surrounded by the Apostles, was left in the artist’s studio in Urbino at his death and described in an inventory as "almost half done." Painting on a canvas with his characteristically dark ground, Barocci had already worked out the major color harmonies and set down the complex poses of the figures, studied in drawings as well. Despite its incomplete state, the painting was admired by the artist’s contemporaries, one of whom called it "a splendor."

This work is exhibited in the “Unfinished: Thoughts Left Invisible” exhibition, on view through September 4th, 2016. #MetBreuer

Guido Reni, Lucretia, 1640–1642

Guido Reni (Italian, Bologna 1575–1642 Bologna), Lucretia, 1640–1642. Oil on canvas, 35 13/16 × 28 3/4 in. (91 × 73 cm). Roma, Musei Capitolini, Pinacoteca Capitolina © Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali – Musei Capitolini, Rome

The distinctive character of Reni’s late paintings has led them to be central topics in recent debates about unfinished works from the seventeenth century. Reni’s contemporaries recognized that his later works are more delicate and softer, painted more freely with less finished surfaces, than his earlier output. These works, however, must be differentiated from those he left genuinely unfinished; Lucretia and others appear in the inventory made at his death as abbozzi (sketches) or not yet finished. Remarkably, the incomplete works were readily collected and displayed after the artist died. When Reni’s heir gave patrons a choice of receiving a refund or accepting unfinished paintings, the biographer Malvasia reported that "there were few who did not more willingly accept the sketches than the money." Lucretia was one of the founding works of the Pinacoteca Capitolina.

This work is exhibited in the “Unfinished: Thoughts Left Invisible” exhibition, on view through September 4th, 2016. #MetBreuer

Emil Nolde, Selbstbildnis mit Hut, um 1917, Aquarell auf rohweißem Japanpapier, 21,1 x 17,4 cm, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Graphische Sammlung, © Nolde Stiftung Seebüll.

August 07, 1867. Emil Nolde (7 August 1867 - 13 April 1956) was a German painter and printmaker. He was one of the first Expressionists, a member of Die Brücke, and is considered to be one of the great oil painting and watercolour painters of the 20th century. He is known for his vigorous brushwork and expressive choice of colors. Golden yellows and deep reds appear frequently in his work, giving a luminous quality to otherwise somber tones. His watercolors include vivid, brooding storm-scapes and brilliant florals.
